So the petition has passed the 1 million mark eh? Well I've some news for you all. YOUR GOVERNMENT DOESN'T CARE! ROAD PRICING GOES AHEAD AS PLANNED!

Check this link.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/u ... 361944.ece

Okay then, they can ignore 1 million. Can they ignore 1.5 to 2 million?
They'll be very foolish if they do. If they try to impose road pricing on the haulage industry then the ordure will heavily impact upon the rotary ventilation device. I am signing that petition after I've logged off this site.

UPDATE: Now over 1 million 36 thousand names!

What e-mail? I did not see an e-mail. I saw the petition and came to my own conclusions.

Errr what facts? One thing the government have been very short of is the facts.

Looks like the response is the whimpering of a very desperate MP...watching his very short political career going down the pan...shame!

Yeah, after the Times article, Safe Speed issued the following PR at 10:43 this morning:

PR445: Arrogance and ignorance at DfT plans to price the poor off the roads

news: for immediate release

As the anti-roads pricing petition turns one million, The Times reports
Transport Minister Alexander saying that he knows best and the public will be
ignored.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "Mr Alexander's arrogance is only matched by his
ignorance. The congestion and road pricing projections on which he purports to
rely are laughably incomplete and hopelessly ill-conceived."

"In particular, they ignore the fact that congestion costs time and time is
money. They tell us that 'congestion costs business £20 billion pounds a year'
- if that's not a congestion charge - I don't know what is. Businesses manage
scare resources and if they can cut costs they do. And they have. Many have
already moved for better road connections - an effect that has created business
parks, retail parks and the M4 corridor."

"If they set road prices at a level high enough to reduce congestion, even by a
tiny bit they will have priced the poor off the roads. It's ironic that a
Labour government would back such a proposal."

"Anyway the primary journey choice regulator is travel time. If they reduce
congestion by pricing the poor off the roads the rich will find that they have
time to travel and rebalance the system restoring congestion levels."

"I find it incredibly difficult to believe that the government believes it's
own words on roads pricing, and I am reminded about Blair selling us the war in
Iraq long after he'd done a deal to support Bush. Who has done the deal this
time? Is the barking mad road pricing plan based on an EU funny handshake?"

<ends>

Shame the headline got corrupted (by my brain) before I hit send.

As I said somewhere else on here: People have short memories.
Come the next election there will be another stage-managed event, of some sort or other, that distracts attention.
The very simple fact is that transport is not the issue, nor is congestion. The issue is freedom, the freedom to travel.
I don't even think that the "state" cares about crime or terrorism, they are just excuses to limit freedom.
Everyone knows that laws do not stop crime, in most cases they don't even slow it down !
The reason for that is very simple, criminals don't obey law.
So, given that laws don't stop crime, neither will ID cards.
You can create as much fuss as you like, road pricing is coming. It may not work too well, but who cares ?
It'll work well enough, at what it is designed for.
You didn't really think that the whole new 20 billion euro gps satellite system was for a few boats and planes ?
Politicians have short [political] lives.....some change parties....some change sex...the people who run the country are always there, never elected.

Full page editiorial in the Mail on Sunday today effectively saying "just how many people can this arrogant government ignore." They provide a link to the petition. This should boost sign-ups.

Maybe a "blue rinse" government would not be so arrogant (but I wouldn't bet on it though). Anyway the Guardian could be the critic in that case.

It doesn't matter if the Mail is biased as:

- everyone knows this
- it should provoke more petition signatures in any event

Have you signed up?

For those who want a "call an election now" petition, someone's already created one: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/CALL-ELECTION/ - with a closing date of 16 May and 272 signatures at the time of writing.

Minister makes road charging vow
Last updated at 05:20am on 12th February 2007

Plans to introduce road charging to cut congestion will be scrapped by Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander unless the country backs the scheme, it has been reported.

Mr Alexander told the Daily Mirror: "Unless motorists and families can see the benefits of bringing in a national road pricing system then it simply won't happen."

On Friday, an online petition opposing the project passed the million-signature mark - with signatures being added at a rate of around one every second that day.

But a Department for Transport spokesman played down Mr Alexander's comments, emphasising that no decision on a national road charging system could be made until the results of planned regional trials were known.

Mr Alexander told the paper: "I understand the public's concerns. Frankly, if we were proposing what the petition suggests, I would share their concerns."

He added: "Congestion is the enemy - and doing nothing is just not an option."

On Saturday, Mr Alexander insisted he would not allow the scale of the protest to deter him from pressing ahead with trials of charging schemes designed to cut congestion.

Mr Alexander said that the scale of the response showed the need for more debate on proposals to cut congestion by charging motorists to use the busiest roads at peak times.

Manchester and Birmingham are thought to be front-runners to host the regional trials, starting in around four to five years.

Sir Rod Eddington's recent report on the future of transport gave strong support to nationwide congestion charging, which the DfT calculates could result in tolls of up to £1.28 a mile on the busiest roads in peak periods.

But of course there will be a general electrion between now and then. Time for the opposition parties to show some backbone...for the first time!

Someone reminded me on another post that all three parties support congestion/road charging.

Wonder which one will invent a new tune at the sight of so many potential votes.??
