Man arrested over '172mph drive'

A motorist has been arrested on suspicion of driving at 172mph on a rural road.

The 33-year-old man was detained by police who had been using a speed gun on a bridge over the A420 near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, on Saturday.

The man has been released on police bail until 17 February.

Helphire, a car lease firm in Abingdon, said an employee who had "borrowed" a £98,000 Porsche 911 Turbo without permission had since resigned.

Out of interest, what the guns calibrated too?

Well, I can't think where on the A420 near Abingdon its even POSSIBLE to do 172mph...

As far as I can recall, the D/C section doesn't have any bridges over it and the rest of the road is too narrow/windy to get even a 911 to that kind of speed....

Edit to add. There's another stretch of D/C after Abington near a place called Cumnor where it looks possible. Its a way after Abingdon though...

AFAIK it's the section near Kingston Bagpuize they're referring to. Though there are no bridges there, as you say.
