There are some very worrying 2006 fatality statistics emerging.

I'm going to make this thread sticky and use it to gather as much data as we can.

This thread is for:

- 2006 whole year figures, both final and estimates
- For police force areas only
- For fatalities only
- With reference source(s)

NI road deaths a 'needless loss'

The deaths of 125 people on Northern Ireland's roads last year have been described as "an immeasurable loss to families and to society".

There were 90 males and 35 females killed in road accidents during 2006. The figure was 10 fewer than the previous year.

POLICE and road safety bosses will tackle the rising death toll on Suffolk's roads with renewed vigour this year following a sharp rise in the number of people killed in crashes.

Final figures for 2006 show 47 people were killed on the county's roads in 40 separate collisions - 30% higher than in the whole of 2005, which saw 36 killed in 33 accidents.

The grim death toll is the highest in Suffolk since 2003 and has dismayed road safety campaigners.

But Suffolk police pledged last night to do all it could to reduce collisions during the next 12 months.

It will be interesting to see what spin Sufolk Safecam manage to put on this terrible news. It really comes as no surprise to me when the standard of driving on the roads in Suffolk seems to get worse by the day.

Grampian:

large link

"Grampian Police said each of the 62 deaths in 2006 was estimated to have cost £1.3million."

Last year: 53 (DfT figure).

62 is higher than any other figure I have for Grampian going back to 1997.

National: quarterly provisional estimates.

DfT was already reporting a 1% RISE in road deaths in its provisional estimates for 2nd quarter 2006, published on 9th November:

Oxfordshire:

http://www.oxfordmail.net/display.var.1 ... its_65.php

"The number of deaths on Oxfordshire's roads this year has reached 65" (this dated 19th December).

2005 is reported as 40, but main DfT records make Oxfordshire (an unknown smaller) part of Thames Valley.

This link is better:
http://www.banburycake.net/search/displ ... deaths.php

"Sixty-eight people died in crashes in 2006. The death toll was almost as high as that in the previous two years combined..."

Very worrying figures - looks like the "buffer zone" in the loss of the downwards trend for deaths has now gone, and they are finally on the increase.

All predicted many moons ago on the Safespeed main site IIRC.

If only the Government had listened :(

In truth, one year's figures for a county sized area aren't enough to tell.

But (based on this and other data) I do believe that North Yorks are doing very well indeed without a camera partnership.

Take a look at the fatalities in Northamptonshire for 2006.

I understand they more or less doubled in 2006, compared to 2005.

Still for 2007, when the fatalities are likely to be lower than for 2006, it will show how effective speed cameras are !!

Have you got a source for that?

The report into the 74 deaths on Northamptonshire's roads in 2006 has revealed that the most important factor in collisions was driver error.

I dont know what they were last year though.

This one reports 60 in October
