Handy

Will you please stop telling people how good trains are. They're busy enough as it is.

Just let them carry on thinking that trains are crap and expensive. :)

oops :D

He's right, you know, they are far too expensive, you wouldn't like them, I mean, sometimes you have whole 10 minute stretches travelling at less than 70mph.

Stafford is on the main west coast drag and anywhere in the North West or the run to London is very fast - but stupidly expensive. I can get to Euston in 1hr 25 mins by train, and as my meetings are normally at places like CentrePoint is by far the best way to get there BUT it costs £140 standard class or over £200 first class!!!!

that's the walk on fare, if you booked before 6:00pm the night before it's much cheaper.

It's not the cheaper if you have to travel at "business" times of day I'm afraid - we book our tickets well in advance by I need to get trains leaving before 9am and can't tie myself to a fixed train coming back.

I got from Winchester to Stansted for £23 return at the beginning of November, that was 2 mainline trains and the tube each way.

I use it most weekends for going to Saints home games simply because it's much quicker than sitting in traffic trying to get out of Southampton. It takes 15 minutes on the train but can take up to 45 minutes in the car. Add in parking and petrol and the train is also cheaper.

£56.50 from Wigan to London (stops at Stafford) if booked the day before, 7:03 from Wigan arrives 9:13 Euston. So that's Business time of day. If you can't work out when you are coming home, I see your problem, so what I do is give myself a window of a few hours, book a 17:45 or 1845 train out of Euston, if meetings finish early I can work in the office, stroll along Tottenham Court Road and look at the electrical shops, or go to one of the many coffee shops in the area. £23.50 one way fare home. Business time of day.

Rather than looking for excuses, why not give it a try?

You misunderstand - I use the train to London regularly (couple of times of month) - I just think it is expensive.

Your Wigan ticket shows up another weirdness in rail pricing - the "if you go further it's cheaper" one. For example, one chap I do work with lives in the South West - if we have a meeting in Birmingham he buys a return to Stafford because it's cheaper - another one is a trip from London to Exeter is more expensive than going on to Newton Abbott! - Try pricing Stafford to London for a business meeting on the internet - you'll be surprised!

But I like trains and use them where they are best.

More than 500 senior conductors for Central Trains have gone on strike resulting in the cancellation of around 400 trains.

Over the three days of planned strikes 2,000 trains will be affected, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across the country.

In the news today. Does not matter how cheap your ticket was or how far in advance you bought it. You are still stranded. Happy Christmas from your public transport provider....... :x

Why are they on strike? I'm always careful not to be quick to criticise - they MAY have a valid cause...

Our local postmen were on strike either side of last weekend - initially I was a bit grumpy, but I met a bunch of them in the local and having heard their case (which wasn't about money) I was much more sympathetic.

Who gives a toss!

Its about reliable transport. When I got stuck in the US because of bad weather I got offered discount accomodation and free refreshments. If it was due to an Airline fault I would have got it for free.

I have no problem with the idea of stranded passengers being compensated/accommodated - it should be the responsibility of the train provider. If they did have to compensate people they might look at their workforce relations a bit more carefully?

Under the contract they have to pay for overnight accomodation or alternative travel.

And perhaps this might have something to do with it --
Imposition of centralised rostering and Christmas and New Years Pay: Contrary to what Central Trains may have told you by letter, the talks that took place last Thursday did not produce a settlement to the dispute.

That's RMT view - be nice to see Central train's ideas.

Had a look at it - but with xmas being an ideal time to rip up tracks with little upset to the travelling public - have central trains anywhere to run??

Just been on the news about the latest rail fare prices.

The reporter said that the government (public) subsidise the network to the tune of £88million a week......... :o

If it’s subsidised by that amount why bother privatising it? I’d also like to see the justification for £88m a week.

I also see the price for the M6 toll went up as from 1st Jan.

The trian operators also made over £300M profit. How does that work then?

They make a profit because we pump in nearly £4B

That means every man woman and child are paying £1 a week just to support the rail network and operators profits......thanks Gordon Brown.
