Hi All

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but i am very concerned with saftey and thought someone could help me. I found this forum searching for trucking forums so hope someone who knows can help.

I have just fininshed a 22 year career in administration with my local council and decided on a change of direction.

I am looking to become a truck driver and need advice on a reputable company to help me train and pass my test.

I am finding it difficult as I am a lady to approach a company and who to trust.

I want to feel safe training in the mainly dominant mans job.

Any advice on training companies would be appreciated to get me started.

I have searched and found this company to be top of list: http://www.trucktraininguk.com Can anyone advise if this company can give me safe training and is credible with the right safety qualifications or can advise on any others.

your help is appreciated

warm regard

Liz

Sorry edited to say I am in the Wigan Lancashire area.

Hi Liz and :welcome:

This question is probably better suited to the forums at Trucknet UK.

Welcome Liz. You could also try www.truckersworld.co.uk.

My best advice to you is to start reading theory books ASAP - there's a hell of a lot to learn. I've been trying to save up for my training for ages so in the mean time I've been learning the theory side. (Helps having a partner who's already a truck driver!)

Best of luck! I think you'll probably find the same attitudes as I do in the engineering sector - yes you'll get a fair share of assholes with the 'women shouldn't be driving trucks' attitude, but you'll get far more of the 'wow, Kudos to you girl!' and a hell of a lot of repect if you're good at your job.

Hi

Thank you both for your replies. The links you posted are great and I have already found some good information to help there.

I've borrowed a few books from the library but they seem a little dated. Just found some great publications mentioned on the forums and ordered them so can't wait.

Hoping to get my training in and pass before the roads get icy.

Thanks once again.

regards

Liz

Its worth buying the latest books on tacho law and WTD because I think the rules have changed recently. You need to be really on the ball on those two (and its damn complicated!) to avoid prosecution and some hefty fines.

Liz, you will also find a lot of support on www.pda-uk.info, including support from a number of female HGV drivers, including one who has been a HGV driver for a mere 23 years.
Over there, as in the other forums, you will find that if you think a question is worth asking, it will be worth being answered.
Do be aware that your questions may not be answered straight away, as we are all drivers ourselves and can often be away for the whole week.
