Quote:
Female driving convictions send insurance higher
By Jennifer Hill

LONDON (Reuters) - Women might historically be safer drivers than men, but when it comes to driving convictions, the gap between the sexes is narrowing.

Some 16.8 percent of men currently have convictions, compared to 9.8 percent of women, according to an analysis of Confused.com's database of 5.5 million registered users.

However, the online price comparison service told Reuters that the number of female drivers with points on their licence had more than doubled from just 4.8 percent three years ago.

That has helped push car insurance premiums higher, adding almost 100 pounds to the cost of the average policy for just one conviction.

"There are more professional women on the road than ever before," said Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.

"Therefore, statistically, the chances of women incurring convictions are greater than in the past and they appear to be steadily on the increase."

Women tend to have fewer, less serious road accidents -- and, therefore, enjoy significantly cheaper car insurance than their male counterparts.

However, women aged 21 to 25 saw the largest increase in premiums in the second quarter of this year -- with prices rising an average 1.4 percent in the three months to end-June -- as their driving record becomes more blemished.

Those with driving convictions could not only face fines of up to 2,500 pounds and incur penalty points -- typically three per conviction -- they also face a huge hike in the cost of motor insurance.

One conviction results in a typical increase of 74.60 pounds, while drivers who have two convictions can expect a hike of 182.92 pounds in annual premiums. Those who are caught three times are in line for an average increase of up to 301.84 pounds, according to figures from Confused.

However, Williams stressed that not all car insurers penalise drivers with penalty points in the same way -- and advised motorists to search the entire market for the best deal.

This can't be true!!!

When the SCP's publish surveys saying that professional men driving mondeo's are the ones who get scammed most we are told that this has no correlation with the fact that they drive more.

Now we have an insurance broker saying that because woman drive more they are getting caught more. Rubbish. The only reason you get caught is because you are a dangerous speeder.

I think I've said before that I find the 'women only' insurance companies patronising and EXCESSIVELY expensive if you drive something bigger than a 1100cc and do more than about 25 miles a year. They are cheep because they know that lower milage drivers have much lower exposure and therefore STATISTICLY present a lower risk, so therefore the premiums are artificially low. As soon as a conviction is gained, the perceived lower risk diapears.

In my own personal experience I find that the majority of times I see someone driving fast and badly its a woman. I'm not surprised in the slightest that women are gaining more and more convictions as on the whole they tend to be much less aware of their surroudings and not looking as far ahead. (Obviously female members of the forum are not included in that statement!)

I'm prepared for a tirade from somewhere but here goes.

In my experience there are two types of female driver

1: Excellent - Confident, Aware, Assertive, and capable of faily rapid progress.

2: Rubbish - Nervous, Lack Awareness, Poor Vehicle Control, Slow, Appear to be unsure of where they're going.

I've never noucntered anyone who falls inbetween. Never really encountered a girl racer or a particularly reckless female driver.

Another peculiarity is that we're supposed to believe that risk has changed with rate of convictions.

Well, excuse me, but risk changes with rates of crashes not rates of convictions.

I conclude that they are 'up to something'. Probably just cheap publicity.

Mrs civil engneer who hold a law degree and works in the insurance industry (third party recoveries) informs me that exceeding the posted limit alone will not be sufficient grounds to prove negligence in the event of an accident.

I would say there's definately a 3rd category in there along the lines of the 'girl racer'

The woman who doesn't actually understand the reprocussions of fast driving, so drives at inappropriate speed everywhere regardless of conditions. IMO these drivers could actually be grouped in with your 2nd classification, substituting every word bar 'slow'.

I'd add another. Defensive.
My wife drives extremely defensively, but I wouldn't call her assertive. But she does drive at a safe speed.

There's more of them round here than category 2! FAR more dangerous too.

I get quite pee'd off when I see these adverts. The first thought that goes through my head is that there would be a great big fuss if there was a "men only" insurance company.

But then I think - the only reason I object to it is because of the PC brigade & if I complain I'm being as bad as them.... I can see how this PC crap is a viscious circle and can only get worse and worse.

It's a tricky one,

yes women represent a lower risk to insurers. They must do because the premiums are lower you can't dispute the facts.

What annoys me is that it's not because of their sex but because of their driving profile.

I understood it had been deemed unlawful recently?

Interesting thread this is ;)

For just 1 year I was with a women only insurer, but that was when I had an older 1.6. As soon as I bought a newer car, also a 1.6 and same make, their quoted premium shot up! Now I know why.....I'm driving the wrong car for my sex!
