I don't think I have a right to do anything to the detriment of others. That is self centered and selfish (correct terminology).

It is the phrase "Anti-social" that gets right up my nose. It is a phrase that has been invented by the PC Brigade and is now used to describe ANYTHING that falls outside of the blinkered, standard behaivour that they expect EVERYONE to conform to. Thats the only reason for the quote and comment!

As to loud pipes, I am currently ambivalent - I have just refitted the baffles to my TL as I am now using it every day and therefore I will be in an ideal position to clarify if the loud exhausts modified other road users behaviour. I agree completely with what Paul said, until a proper study is carried out, the effects cannot be quantified.

I have also heard reports that pedestrians do not notice hybrid vehicles when they are running on electrical power as they expect a noise with a moving vehicle

If an engine has been properly set up to run with a particular exhaust system then it will be OK. The point I was trying to make is that you can't just 'take the exhaust off' without re-adjusting the carburation / injection settings.

I would certainly agree that there should be some law to stop the current free for all with pedestrians. They need to accept responsibility for their own actions rather than it always being the fault of the motorist

Remember the phase "stop look listen"

Sound is a very important part of our ability to detect hazards, thats why they fit sirens to emergency vehicles.

Anyhow nothing more satisfying than the sound of a un-corked Vtwin..

While my own bike sounds fantastic (V4) with a race can on, I'm sure the people on popular biking routes who hear nothing but this day in day out would strongly disagree.

I ride bikes that are legally allowed to be louder than yours ner ner ne ner ner
pre january 81 it is up to the MOT inspectors discretion on whether your bike is too loud, likewise with the police.
I haven't had a pedestrian step out in fornt of me ever. when filtering, I'm heard before seen and cars move over to let me through, cars rarely pull out because they've heard me. these are facts. My troubles began some years ago when I had a brief flirtation with a honda and borrowed mates sports bikes, GSXRsummutorother, GSXR 1100 when all was suddenly not lovely.

One of the reasons (apart from oil companies being on the big sell) roads are being resurfaced with SMA is to reduce road noise, which this stuff does well. Trouble is, it does it so well, peds can't hear you because modern vehicles are too quiet. When I've walked the kids to school I have a terrible job hearing them speak due to road noise but it's not the engine or exhaust sound it's the tyres on the road, a horrible racket that I don't rememer from years ago. So what has changed? Why are tyres so much noisier? Personally I'd rather hear the sound of engines than the howl tyres make these days.

Yes, I do sometimes wear a day-glo jacket to help others see me

If you really think it 'helps' anyone, why not always wear it?

With your emphasis on 'helps', can I take it that, as well as headlights, you also don't believe that day-glo jackets help bikers get seen?

But what if it turns out to be 30 lives a year lost for their peace and quiet? That's not a price worth paying by any reasonable standard.

My guess (yes guess, no more than that) is that forcing all bikes to be 'quiet' will cost MORE THAN 30 lives a year.

So lets have a think. Kick the side stand from under a stationary motorcycle and it falls over. So even with the engine off, bikes arn't the last word in safety.

And you get put in hospital by the owner :D

I'm struggling with the mentality that goes with buying a machine that does 0-60 in 3 secs, touch 100mph in first and pull wheelies in the first 3 gears and then worry about safety. It's like keeping a pet tiger and worrying it will bite you.

My bike pulls wheelies in 4th gear as well.
But seriously, what's the problem with having that amount of power available? I have that sort of power cos:
a) I enjoy it
b) I can handle it
c) I know when to use and when not to use it
d) at 6'5" & 18 stone, I'd look damn silly on a scooter
e) I don't want to have to be forever changing gears on a slight gradient

Not got a chain...

But my 2001 Buell X1 lightning has the LOUDEST road legal exhaust ever fitted to a modern motorcycle. :D

As most accidents which loud cans would allegedly prevent are low speed jobs (SMIDSYs at junctions, people doing U-turns when bikes are filtering down the outside, etc) maybe it would be best to develop an exhaust that was proportionally louder at lower speeds! (i.e the rate of change was very low)

I don't know how technically achievable that is!

Dunno, you could do it with an adjustable baffle - butterfly valve type thing in the pipe that alters its angle according to the engine speed, or possibly something clever with exhaust valve timing?

I find having independant chokes on each pot helps - can keep the engine running effectively on one pot and get the other side backfiring every 2-3 seconds!

(and yes I KNOW its bad for the engine!)

I usually find pulling on the clutch and blipping the throttle works.
