I am about to start campaigning for speed humps to be put on the road near my home next to the shopping parade where their are often young children around and where the cars have a tenandancy to speed by. Can anyone advise on a good place to start. I live in Manchester, would i start by going to the local Council?

What about starting a campaign to improve the teaching of road safety to children instead. This will benefit them not just on the road that you mention but throughout their lives.

I agree the children should be educated as all pedestrians, I am in a campain to remove humps, they have not worked in our town at all, wasted thousands of pounds in cash and caused numerous problems.
I was taken to hospital 4 months ago and each hump we passed over compounded the damage, now I am still recovering from what should have been a 4 to 6 week period, even the paramedics are in favour of removal, evidence shows they are futile. As an ex Driving Instructor I do understand your concern but like in many other situations do not jump for what appears to be the obvious answer, use a little thought educate the kids, it will work worldwide for life not just on your tiny bit of road.

Road humps create more problems than they solve though, don't they?
In fact I don't believe they even solve any problems.
I think they are perceived to solve a perceived problem.
And they annoy everyone. And cause damage. And are ugly. And increase pollution.

They cause far more problems than they solve - you should be campaigning to get rid of them.

Can you honestly put your hand on your heart and say that you want the bumps for the children or to deter traffic going down your road?
As one who lives on a humped (supposedly 20 mph) road , take it from me the only difference the humps make is in the amount of noise generated, not in the speed of traffic.
Another nasty side effect - why do some areas put up barriers on the pavement beside bumps - to stop cars sliding onto the pavement in icy conditions.
Humps -practical on a camel --impractical on roads.
