If they used any more qualifications it would be unintelligible.

Be careful of "largest contributory factor". I have seen this given a strange meaning: Discount the primary causal factor. What are left are the contributory factors. The largest of these is speed. Not what you would understand at first glance.

Note the use of "collisions" now instead of "accidents". Everyone seems to be doing this now as if it was a central edict.

I followed the links and found the report for derbyshire for 2001/2 to 2002/3, listing the camera locations, the basis of justification etc and the number of KSIs in the year before and after placement.

and the number of KSIs went down by.... 3 from 66 to 63 some 4.5 %. which isn't quite the 40% that some SCPs like to quote.
I would bet that 4.5 % in the context is less than 'statistically sgnificant'

If we paraphrase their jargon, we find they're saying:

"When an accident happens, the greater the speed the greater the injuries".
Well, it seems obvious that a car hitting something at 50 will do more damage than a car hitting something at 20.

What they totally fail to address is why the accident happened in the first place.

Cumbria were claiming a 70% reduction in DEATHS AND SERIOUS injuries. Their website has figures which fail to show this, so I asked if they were misquoted in the press report - 70 instead of 7 - (still optimistic).

Apparently this simple request is being treated as a Freedom of Information Request, and will be nswered within 20 days!!

In the meatime I asked the reporter for the newspaper concerned, and he says they most definately were NOT misquoted - he asked to confirm the figure, and they did. He is now aware of the info. on the Cumbria website, and is looking into it too!

clearly says the speed limit built up areas is 30 for single carriage ways is 60, 70 for duals and motorways.

So no matter what the speed limit says in the little round circle I can drive 70 on a motorway (even if theirs a 50 limit) 30 in a 20 and 60 in a 40.

like it.

Interestingly they also say speeding is a serious criminal offence - so why don't you get a criminal record for it?

Is this like saying most injury accidents happen when one or more vehicle is actualy moving.

Won't be long till we get calls for a guy waving a red flag walking in front of the car.

To have any reasonable statisticial significance the reduction for random accidents needs to be at least one standard deviation, which is the square-root of the average number of accidents, or about 8 in this case. Hence a reduction of 3 in just random variation, which has no statistical significance.
