'I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit; and, upon this charge
Cry God for Harry, England and St George!'
Shakespeare's Henry V,
Act 3, Scene 1:
It is perhaps somewhat ironic and fitting that our Patron Saint, according to various church texts referred to since the fifth century, state that George was a soldier with the rank of tribune in the Roman Army. He was beheaded for protesting loudly in public against the Emperor Diocletian (sometimes referred to as "The Dragon") for his persecution of Christians. George became a martyr and was held as a shining example of bravery for championing the poor and defending the Christian faith.
St George is the patron saint of sufferers of syphillis, plague and leprosy, and is patron saint to soldiers, farmers, archers, horses and their riders, butchers, sailors and Scouts. He is revered as a defender of Christianity by various strands of the faith around the world, and held as an example of courage, hope, honour and fortitude.
Perhaps we can add motorists too?
Happy St. George's day.
