The Safe Speed campaign is launching the first national 'Scrap Speed Cameras Week' on 24th June. I will be in London that week.

This is timed to coincide with:

- the end of the famous scrap speed cameras petition at midnight on Tuesday 26th.

- The first announcement of 2006 national road deaths figures at 10am on Thursday 28th.

- The verdict in the ECHR right to silence case soon after 8:30am on Friday 29th.

The following 'quick' advert is available:

Image

In the next 24 hours web and PR materials will be issued via:

http://www.safespeed.org.uk/sscw.html (page does not yet exist).

Webmasters wishing to use the advert, please feel free to do so and link to http://www.safespeed.org.uk/sscw.html

All offers of assistance, publicity stunts, general encouragement, donations, ideas and especially promotion gratefully received.

The least you can do is sign the 'scrap speed cameras' petition if you agree that speed cameras don't make the roads safer.

If you ask me we should all be down in London, this whole affair of screwing the motorist has gone too far!

It'd be nice to have a 'launch event' - perhaps a press conference.

But I don't have the cash and could use help with organisation. We could easily spend a grand on hiring a venue and preparing materials to hand out.

Anyone want to help? It could be Sunday or Monday. It would need to be London.

Leaflets would be good, and people to hand them out.

Anyone want to help with design / cost / distribution / procurement?

We definitely need to pull out all the stops here. We are winning and must press home our advantage.

Just thinking out loud and I appreciate that this might, (well, will!), sound stupid, and perhaps self destructive, but I've always thought that a mass 'fly by' of as many scameras as possible would be good exposure.

I mean, get loads of people to drive past the same scamera(s) and set it/them off loads of times then publish the fact that these cameras were set off multiple times by the same car and the camera a) didn't actually do anything to stop the driver from doing it, and b) demonstrate the fact that there were no accidents as a result of excessive speed.

(Having said all that, actually managing to get to an illegal speed during the day in London might take some doing.)

The downside of course would be that it would mean the risk of prosecution and run the risk of spoiling the reputation of SS.

Sorry if this is deemed inappropriate, as I said, I'm just thinking out loud.

Although its not in my nature to DO things like this, it IS in my nature to think them up :hehe:

A 'fly by' using the same car driven each time by a different driver each wearing a balaclava (medicinal needs, they've all got earache) would certainly cause a kerfuffle. The more the merrier.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!!

I wish I'd thought up the 'one car different driver'' approach! And the balaclava idea, is brilliant, but a crash helmet would be better I think, after all we'd be doing such a dangerous thing!!

If it's a Gatso, surely all you have to do is fit a temporary "tinted" window in the back?

Might be an idea to clone the license plate from one of Prescott's jags maybe?

A chap called CW suggested:

Quote:
Now if we could plant a dummy Gatso beside a road, hire a JCB and a skip lorry, and tip off the press, we could do a nice film of it being scrapped.

It would be even more fun if it was on the same road as a real Gatso and we didn't tip off the police.

Now I think that's a brilliant idea - what great film! What great pictures!

Can anyone here make it happen? Please?

Tie in with Captain Gatso and he'll do it to a real one for you ;-)

The closest to an official explanation comes in TRL report XXX which conclude that 'some drivers must be getting worse'.

Is this omission temporary?

Sorry Roger, but tie in with that wanker and you immediately lose any credibility.

we could put a cover over an already burnt out camera with "closed by order of the EHCR"

Then you would not be perverting the course of justice as it was already broke.

I'd definitely avoid Captain Gatso at all costs. He comes across as a right plonker.

The ABD might be up for such a stunt.

I'm sure we could have fun with photoshop 'filming' toppling gatsos that appear to have been demolished/detonated etc. Shame Fred Dibner is dead as he'd be great for the voiceover

Yes, of course it is. I got interrupted and forgot to go back and fill in the blank.

It's TRL629.
http://www.trl.co.uk/store/downloadreport.asp?id=4956

Curiously I can't find it in the free report list.

Brilliant! Can anyone do me a good, hi-res photoshop job of a Gatso in a skip?

Come of folks - let's get this show on the road. So far I've had two offers of assistance and two donations. Surely we can do 100 times better. We have brilliant people here.

Who's spreading the word? Who's going to organise something? Who's going to help with funding?
