Just a thought, how about getting in touch with other motoring-related protest groups such as Farmers for Action?

I realise that their aims aren't quite the same as ours, but I'm sure no-one here has an issue with complaining about high fuel tax.

If we could get the truckers involved too (more of a common interest if the issue of the 56mph limiter is brought up) then quite a large group could be formed.

I don't think the police would appreciate tractors being taken down the M4, but a good motorway-standard 3-lane A road (with cameras on it, of course!) could make a good venue, and a much larger convoy.

There is a big problem in making common cause with organisations that have fundamentally different objectives.

It's certainly true that there is a lot of overlap in terms of members of one having sympathy with the other. But it doesn't follow that every Safe Speed supporter wants to see large cuts in fuel duty, nor that everyone who wants fuel duty cut is a camera sceptic. The effect would tend to be to, at the margins, erode support for both organisations.

Also such a link would tend to encourage critics to brand Safe Speed as part of a generalised "right-wing" movement.

I see your point and yes it makes sense (especially since my political leaning are generally left wing with the exception of transport and the environment)

OTOH, I would only be too happy to support a group of truckers protesting the removal of the 56mph speed limiter (or fuel tax!)

Perhaps a more informal arrangement where other groups can mention here any planned action and those that support it can join the appropriate forum and tag along, just dont wave safespeed banners while you're doing it. In return we get to do the same on their forum when the next protest is planned.

I think PeterE is correct.

There is a risk that the cause could get fragmented. The fuel protest is not a good example. The truckers fell out with the farmers this time around. Too much power playing. At the moment the fuel protest looks to have stalled out.

Our cause stands on its on. Anything else would dilute the message we are trying to get accross.

what about links then? that way, members can pick and choose who and what they support without official representation from the organisations? i have brought some members here and i am sure that some would like to support the campaigns that i am involved in ie truck related

What about joining a general Civil Liberties Webring, then?
No dilution of cause and sharin of users with other groups they may be interested in.
I have sent emails about this to the organisers, but they may have fallen foul of spam filtering.
Webring hub at:
http://w.webring.com/hub?ring=testwebring
(Although I have paid to remove adverts, some remain; working on this problem.
Particularly irritating as they seem to feature lesbian chatlines on there today, after auto-detecting
the anti-LGB-discrimination membergroups. Words will be had.)

Links directory (old project) about other Civ Lib groups not directly contacted (apart from one) at:
http://freedom.is/frdircl.htm
(Second link include's FFA.)

Lesbian Advert virus problem now fixed!
There was a minor TOS change, and the management interface (forms) was/were changed.
Also, Fathers 4 Justice have joined the Webring!

Now there's a major Intl player and a major UK player, I can approach FFA without being cheeky.
