just saw this on MCN too. It takes a picture of the front of the bike, which is very useful seeing as motorbikes haven't had a front number plate for 29 years d'oh!
They also point out that 1 in 4 'extreme' speeders are criminals, as in drivers as well as riders, but hey motorcyclists are just another minority group for the police to marginalise and discriminate against.

How on Earth can it record the bikers face? Helmets cover most of the face unless its an open face helmet! What another waste of money!!!!

They may use something like this....

www.advanced-intelligence.com/ir.html

But will it see through the dense iridium visors some bikers wear? If it doesn't, sales and prices of iridium visors will go up I bet! :P

I'm not a biker so could someone please tell me how much of your face is actually visible when wearing a normal crash helmet, even with the visor up? I'd have thought that you'd see little more than the bottom of the rider's forehead, the eyes, most of the nose and a bit of both cheeks. So what if they can see through tinted visors. Can they really recognise someone when half their face is hidden by er... whatever crash helmets are made out of?

No mate, not really. The cheeks are pressed against the inside of the helmet. If its a full face helmet, not the whole of the nose can be seen, and even less if you have an breath deflector fitted (stops visor from steaming up). My helmet, which is a common make and shape, covers my forehead to just above eyebrows, the padding inside covers my cheek bones, and the front of the helmet covers about half way up my nose. The more a helmet covers, the more protection it provides.

Ah. Even less of someone's face is showing than I thought. Does all this sound like like bollocks to anyone else?

"Yes, that's the one officer. I'd recognise that face anywhere. Eyebrows, two eyes and half a nose. That's GSXR all right."
"Thankyou ma'am. Righto GSXR. You're nicked. Mind the stairs on the way to the cell."

I have a fitted mask in my helmet that covers upto the bridge of my nose, then my sunglasses which gives the camera about an inch of flesh to ID me.
8-)

They have about as much chance of convicting me from a front photo, as we have of getting a decent state pension.

Bring back front number plates in soft plastic. Why should bikers be immune from prosecution? :D

Bitter and twisted huh.

Why not bring back real policing instead.

Bikers who ride badly usualy end up killing themselves, As opposed to car drivers who usualy kill somebody else.....I use the term bad rather than speed.

Huh ? Think your a little bit out with that one Gizmo.
The penalty for 'Having a number plate that does not comply with the law' is, up to a thousand pounds !
And thats just for 'Attempting to avoid detection' by using a spray on your plates.

>"The DVLA is today warning motorists not to be tempted to use sprays which can make number plates unreadable by roadside cameras. It says more and more of the products are available over the internet but that motorists face fines of up to £1000 for attempting to dodge detection in this way.

This statement is at the bottom of the page on this link:
