Are there any statistics on this figure stretching from at least the early 1960s to the present day which include all motor vehicle accidents and not just the injury/fatality ones? I was also wondering how accurate that statistic could be and the number of accidents that go unreported. Are accidents being under reported more or less than over previous decades?

Statistics have never been gathered nationally for damage only accidents. I think this is largely a result of there being no legal requirement to report a damage only accident. There's also the problem of defining an accident - most accidents are extremely minor in natue - door dings and parking bumps for example. When is an accident an accident?

We do have excellent injury accident stats by year going back to 1950.

I'd say anything that should be mentioned to an insurance company. Injury accidents are only a certain proportion of all accidents and I wondered whether knowing about all accidents would show information about injury accident trends and whether the roads have been getting safer over the years or whether the fall in injury/fatality type accidents are mostly down to improved car design and medical intervention.

Without knowing about all accidents it is going to be tricky to find out. I wonder if any insurance companies have records that go back a few decades?
