About 2 years ago a fairly wide one way street in newport was divided in two: a normal lane on the left, and a contraflow bus lane on the right.
The problem is that the pavements are very busy. It is a situation where one should normally position a decent amount to the right, well away from the pavement, as pedestrians walk extremely close the edge. Now that the bus lane is there, it is now illegal for cars to position further right*, and they must keep very close to the pavement edge: virtually with wing mirror overhanging.
I find it extremely worrying. Most traffic is already down to about 15mph or below, so there is no solution there. I hate it because every time I drive down there I am forced by law to behave in a way I know is fairly dangerous, or risk a fine.
*I don't know if there are bus lane cameras, but if there were it would be a geat opportunity to fine people every time they make a life-saving swerve as someone steps out into the road.
