ROAD DEATH TOLL LOWEST ON RECORD
Lincolnshire Echo
09:30 - 02 January 2006

Safety campaigners today saw a glimmer of hope in the battle to cut road deaths in Lincolnshire.

The number of people killed on the county's roads in 2005 was 69 - fewer than in any year since records were first kept in 1995. The death toll peaked at 104 in 2003.

Road safety specialists said today that the drop followed intensive efforts to educate drivers and improve conditions.

Better safety features in modern cars, such as airbags and impact beams, are also thought to have had an effect.

Lincoln father David Jassie (55), whose son Trevor (30) was killed two years ago, said: "Maybe the worst of the carnage is over."

A staggering 929 people have lost their lives in crashes on Lincolnshire's road network since 1995.

Nice to see, but a bit early to get over-excited.

If you average 929 over the entire period it comes out as 84.45 per year, if you remove 2005's minimum and 2003's maximum and then average the remaining years it comes out as 84 per year, so it's not a particularly significant change unfortunately. Worryingly, 2003 was the worst year - if the present enforcement systems actually achieved anything you'd have expected a steady year-on-year decline...

And surely they were recording accident stats before 1995... I wonder what the 1980 - 1994 figures were that they needed to be "forgotten".

Yeah right, tell that to the drivers who lost their lives the other day on the A17 by Cranwell.
