I recently came across one of the nastiest Gatsos (in terms of positioning) I have ever seen. This is on the A692 south-west of Gateshead in Tyne & Wear - see
map link.
The entire road between Lobley Hill and Street Gate is a 30 limit, even though it is totally non built-up. It is a very twisty road, but even so I would have thought a 40 would be more reasonable, particularly as it would allow for 30 gateways when entering the built-up area. As it is lit, there are no 30 repeaters.
Given this, I'm sure many drivers fail to realise that the whole stretch of road remains a 30. Yet, what do we find half-way along, in the downhill direction? Of course, a Gatso. Wonderful - must rake it in
Obviously matters are much better over the border to the south in County Durham
