The scams really are trying to get in the overall "Road Safety ticket. See the reply I got when I challenged the Cheshire scam over rising deaths. Does anyone have a figure for Cheshire, I'm not sure I believe them?

"Thank you for your enquiry to the safety camera mailbox.

We do not need to justify this scheme. Law enforcement is not a subjective matter, and safety camera merely assist us in enforcing the law.

However i will point out that road deaths fell last year across the country despite the increase in road vehicles. However this decrease will not be down to the use of camera technology (only a small part of it will).
Safety cameras are a small part of the wider road safety strategy. The fact that fixed penalty notices are issued from these devices demonstrates quite clearly that some road users have no regards for the law, for their safety or the safety of others. All the safety cameras in Cheshire are highly visible and signed well in advance. I am not aware of any of the cameras in Cheshire that actually makes anyone speed or run a red-light. The decision to exceed the speed limit or run a red-light is purely down to the driver.
People pass their test sticking to the speed limit and obeying red-lights, then abuse those limits, and complain when they detected doing so.

Cameras in Cheshire will continue to play a part in the annual reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads. We have seen the average figure of people killed or seriously injured fall from 1150 per year to 740 per year and continues to fall."

Is this what you're looking for.

So where's the decrease? what the hell have they to gloat over? Once again the message keeps changing because the reality is, they know cameras aren't working, there's nothing safe about them.

I guess they can rely upon the gullible British public though as a means of keeping them.

Ah, but law enforcement is a subjective matter. You can't enforce all the laws, all the time, so you have to make a subjective judgment as to which laws to concentrate on, and where to enforce them.

There is no point in enforcing the law for its own sake, you have to demonstrate that enforcement activity overall serves the public good. This is what the scammers have signally failed to do.

Call me a pedant, but I would hold their comment in higher regard if it was more grammatical:

"....and complain when they detected doing so. "

"However i will point out..."

"We have seen the average figure of people killed or seriously injured fall from 1150 per year to 740 per year and continues to fall."

Ouch!

I said I was a pedant!

Yes you do. The reason why you do will become more apparent as time passes until eventually, even someone as painfully shortsighted as you will see it.

It sounds like the smug, default fall back position that we've heard already from Cumbria and others (the law's the law, we're only part of a greater operation etc. etc.). Ultimately the above reply demonstrates a complacency and ignorance that is dangerous!!

What is becoming clearer though is a gradual admission that while cameras are not the most valuable safety tool, they are the most valuable enforcement tool, and very important in supporting anything else they fancy doing (ie. funding it....)

Isn't it "the law" that the CPS have to apply a public interest test in all prosecutions? So enforcing the law, for the sole reason that it's the law, may in fact be against the law.
