Speed cameras up, officers down
Devon and Cornwall Police slashed the number of traffic officers following the introduction of speed cameras, the BBC has learned.
In 2001 the force reduced its traffic officers by 11% to 192 - around the time cameras were becoming widespread.
The force said the number of traffic officers had remained relatively static, but was under review and was likely to be increased.
The figures were obtained by the BBC using the Freedom of Information Act.
Road safety campaigners have been strongly critical of the figures and claim cameras do not prevent dangerous driving.
