I really wish that the law would demand two eyes and one mind on the road - particularly at low speeds, where there's danger.
In case that last point is less than obvious, people slow down where there's danger. This is very important, so I'll repeat it -
people slow down where there's danger, because there is danger. But, because there is danger, it's not enough to simply slow down - one has to be extra vigilant along with it. Slowing down does not fully compensate for the increased danger - often not nearly enough.
We are told by many people that slowing down gives you more time to react. This is simply not true. The reality is that it's the level of danger which reduces the time we have
available to react, so we slow down to give us more of a chance to be able to react in the shorter
available time.
On the other side of the coin, where there's little or no danger there's no need to slow down - slowing down isn't going to make things any safer than they already are.
