'Five drivers a day' were caught speeding at more than 100mph in the space of just one year, police have confirmed.

The figures, obtained from a Freedom of Information request submitted by BBC Radio 5 Live, show that in 2014-15 at total of least 2,169 traffic reports involving motorists travelling at more than 100mph were filed by police.

The fastest speed recorded was by a driver in a BMW M4 Coupe doing 156mph - more than double the speed limit - on the A1 in Cambridgeshire in March.

Radio 5 Live "In short" 9Follow up) : Speeding driver: I was caught doing 103 miles per hour

Is this more enforcement finding what is going on anyway, or is this a serious increase in speeds?
Impossible to know from this data as it stands. (Radio Interviews completed 2 and 1 to go later.)

I would be more interested in the danger posed in these incidents rather than the speed attained. It is safety we are concerned with and not simply speed.

5 Live are in quite a frenzy about it, conflating cars racing at high speed in urban areas with 100mph on an empty motorway, interviewing bereaved fathers, repentant speeders etc.

there's an extended discussion at 6:30.

I may end up throwing the radio out of the window.
