I saw an interesting one today. We had quite a bit of snow come down for a couple of hours which resulted in a couple of inches and some snow lying on the main roads. I followed a woman along the same road in the same conditions for a few miles and noticed that whatever the lollipop said her speed was exactly 10MPH below. 20MPh in a 30MPH, 30 when the road reached 40MPH then 40MPH in the 50MPH....i'm wondering if she had been told to drive 10MPH slower than normal in the snow and if she had hit a motorway or dual carriageway she would have attempted a frightening 60MPH...;-)

Highly likely ! Sadly driving instructors might forget that every word they say if not expressed clearly and with good explanations will be taken as red !
I had someone I know come off a slip road and the got straight into L2 (nothing in L1) and upon asking I was told as she was going straight on at the roundabout (2 miles ahead) that she was taught this is what to do !!! (no wonder there are so many undertaking these days !).
I dar say he was just advising for that moment that day ... but she took it that this is what was intended !! :( Sadly though anyone that reads the Highway Cod ought to know the rules !

Why do so few read it ? How many do read it after passing their test? (or online anyway !)

This is why some sort of (harder than the normal test) assesment should be done after a couple of years of passing a test. It would encourage people to actually improve their driving skills, instead of assuming they know it all (and can't do a thing wrong) from day one or even going downhill which seems to be the sorry case with some I observe driving today.

Well, once again, what’s needed are more traf pol. What better than they to observe and pull over drivers behaving badly or those who have aquired bad habits. I’ve always thought that was an important part of their job but I don't see it happening much. I guess it's because, being a civilian in a normal car, they feel they can act like idiots around me. Not something I’m entirely comfortable saying tbh, but it makes a case for more unmarked traf pol.

I’ve been going to a monthly meeting locally for IAMs which has lots of active and retired police and I have to say I’m finding it really interesting. I can be totally up front and honest with them about everything and, in return, they are the same with me and impart great wisdom which reinforces my experiences. It’s actually done a lot to assure me they are ‘on my side’ so to speak and not always just out to get you. Some of the stories are a bit gruesome and graphic mind; one of the speakers is a paramedic.

One of the sad things I’ve noticed, though, is some of the traf pol I have observed or followed, who should serve as a good example to us all, sometimes leave a lot to be desired with their driving: indicating, road position, safe driving distance and..er.. speed. (Cough).

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

Presumably the advanced drivers rather than the cat food people

    Something I've always said, but our last lot of failed Lawyers( Bl;air & Brown ) looked at the balance sheet and saw road safety & policing in terms of profit and loss ( in hard cash) ,with no allowance for the saving in heartache , loss of life and injuries in prevention by advice . ( And possibly with a penalty ,but showing how & why there was an offence ).

Just seen Peter's post - the alternative would help keep joints ( and no not spliffs) supple :D

perhaps another feed of IAMS, with a joint stik. Me -I put it down to spending days installing a phone system in the Altzeimers society HQ in Leamington SPA. I'd suggest it's infectious . :D ( And I've had problems remembering where I put the cars keys since  )
