CLASSIC and historic vehicles are to be exempted from the annual MoT test, the Government announced today.

From November 18 this year, owners of vehicles manufactured before 1960 will not have to have to take them in for an MoT, Roads Minister Mike Penning said.

Pre-1960 licensed vehicles make up about 0.6% of the total number of licensed vehicles in Britain, but are involved in just 0.03% of road casualties and accidents.

Mr Penning said: "We are committed to cutting out red tape which costs motorists money without providing significant overall benefits.

"Owners of classic cars and motorbikes tend to be enthusiasts who maintain their vehicles well - they don't need to be told to look after them, they're out there in all weathers checking the condition of the engine, tyres and bodywork."

He added: "Owners of classic vehicles will still be legally required to ensure that they are safe and in a proper condition to be on the road, but scrapping the MoT test for these vehicles will save motorists money."

The decision follows a campaign by the All-Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicles Group, led by East Yorkshire MP Greg Knight, its chairman.

Mr Knight said today: "I am delighted by this announcement. Accidents involving historic vehicles are extremely rare and the majority of owners are meticulous in keeping their vehicles in good condition. Having to have an annual MoT test for a vehicle which may only travel a few hundred miles in a year was costly and absurd."

AA president Edmund King said: "Cutting the red tape of an MoT requirement for classic pre-1960 cars is a victory for common sense."

What next - some Government department saying that the SCP is creating danger on Britain's roads . :o

What?

It won't save me anything.

It will save a tiny minority a few quid, and give them carte blanche to do skimp on the maintenance.

You could say that about virtually any group of motorists. Is it even true?

Owners of high performance cars tend to be enthusiasts who maintain their vehicles well. This one is probably more true than it is of classic cars.

Owners of yellow cars tend to be enthusiasts who maintain their vehicles well. Might be true, I don't know, I just made it up, much like Mr Penning.

I stuck this up as a parallel to road safety . They say "Quote:
Owners of classic cars and motorbikes tend to be enthusiasts who maintain their vehicles well"
Perhaps one day "ROAD SAFETY" might get some specialists on the road to look at standards of driving /vehicle control / observation and all the finer points that make for a safe driver , not just rely on some arbitrary number called the speed limit. We used to have them in specialist vehicles, with specialist training, and equipped to stop and more often educate those in need of education . Now we've got a horde of folks whose only speciality is "thinking" that a car is speeding.
Can't they now see that a lot of motorists that use their judgement on the APPROPRIATE SPEED for the circumstance ,are as qualified and enthusiastic as the classic motorist brigade .
What next - owners of PINK cars allowed to drive in pedestrian areas on set days of the week . And blue ones on other days . ( OH, and green ones on alternate sundays).

I was amused by the thread this provoked on the Yahoo home page a few weeks ago. There were a fair few muppets rejoicing and saying they were going to go out any buy pre-1960 cars to save money! I'm sure the (up to!) £50 a year on an MOT they're going to save will easily cover the additional expense of running one!

Anyway, dpesn't concern me - my "classic" is from the 1980s!

I see they're (like the free road tax) not making it a rolling exemption though.

Could result in such cars being restricted from cities - like in Germany (unless you buy an expensive H plate)
