So there you have it, direct from the Dom's mouth.

I saw this on local TV the other day. It has just five days left before it expires; salient part starts 1:50 seconds in..

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

Can't get it up as I'm restricted in downloads. That would be the bit about refusal to insure a car because of the area ? Funnily enough some firms refuse on car now being too old grounds .

Essentially, it’s about how any driver that’s potentially driving at an unsafe speed can look squeaky driving licence clean just because of where they hang out.

There’s the usual type on there of course, banging on about how speeders deserve what they get and speed kills and blah blah blah, but I’m sure they would be the first to complain if they didn’t get their local provisions because good long distance drivers have been banned over the totting up procedure or they can’t get the taxi, the Chinese grub delivery, their son or daughter cant visit etc.

Why these same people they always dig up from under a rock are never asked something like "this wide road is deserted with no parked cars or children so how can this road which was previously a :40: be so dangerous for a speeding driver now doing 35 mph in a :30:? No, they don't dare ask that because it's a loaded question which should be asked but which wouldn't elicit the answer they're looking for. They always load the questions in their favour; never with impartiality.

TBH I thought Dom was going to end by saying something in support of the scameras, like all these insidious programs tend to. But, to his credit, instead it was about the unfairness of the current system and in his own words "More to do with where you live than how you drive".

If that is true, and this program shows it's incontrovertible, then how much more unfair can you get?

(Waits for someone to say "if everyone never ever speeds it's fair to all". ) :tumbleweed:

Problem is that these days we need RULES ,that must (under penalty of this and that) be obeyed. Years ago we had responsibilities and obligations. Mine as a driver was to drive sensibly, and as a pedestrian to look out for my safety . We were all EDUCATED to look out for the safety of ALL road users, be we driver/biker/cyclist or pedestrian. Today the finger of blame culture is upon us creating divisions in road safety .And the authorities fail in any attempt to bridge the gap .

Oh and where would the control freaks be without rules? Quivering under a table like a claustrophobe in a wardrobe...;-)

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

This BBC news article touches on the same subject:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17316466

However, it has to be said that one of the main risks you are covering with car insurance is theft, which clearly has nothing to do with your driving competence.

Indeedy. In fact it’s another sort of discrimination.

I couldn’t help being brought up on a Council estate, where premiums are higher, as opposed to a more safe and secure Ivory Tower.

It’s not my fault I’m a neer do well bum with a crappie education from a poor family! Image

An advocate of tough love eh Ernest ?

Ahhh.. it's lovely down here with all this water from the Elan Vally. Think I'll do a bit of maintenance on the fish pond tomorrow, after I've washed the car and caravan. Pop down if you get thirsty  :D
