DETERRENT: Flashing signs such as this one may be installed. Kami Thomson
SPEED PROBLEM: Drivers do not even notice the Longman’s 30mph signs, say experts. David Whittaker-Smith

NEW flashing signs could be used to slow down drivers on a stretch of dual carriageway where more than 400 speeders were caught during a crackdown.

The Northern Safety Camera Partnership says it is considering installing the devices on the A82 in Inverness to warn people they are breaking the 30mph limit.

The move was revealed after an operation on the short stretch of trunk road caught motorist at the rate of 23 an hour – six times the usual detection rate.

This follows a report about the 414 motorists that were 'caught' on this d/c stretch of road that enters the outskirts of Inverness. There is a query of the placement of the 30mph signs and frankly I don't see why it isn't a 40mph it would make more sense.
A local football arena does see many people walk this road, and it needs to be re-engineered to prevent this, although there are many police in attendance when the matches occur so clear and easy observation to all motorists.
Provision of the SID/VAS devices, seems like a sensible move and will help motorists to at least be aware of the speed limit, it might have been decent for them, to have applied this method first not afterwards. Nothing like making headlines first to scare motorists though - and make them fear potential camera vans.
An review of this roads speed limit needs to be rapidly revised.
There is a sweep protected (illegal as it is way too warn), lane off the roundabout where vehicles may have been doing up to 70mph road so to drop it to 30mph may leave many vehicles braking on a corner ! The 30mph is too close to this roundabout, as a minimum.
