Torched, the burnt out remains of the speed camera beside the A17 at Cranwell.
A ONE thousand pound reward is being offered for information leading to the capture and prosecution of arsonists responsible for destroying speed cameras in the county after another camera in the Sleaford area was attacked.
On the night of August 24, at around 11.30pm, a speed camera on the A17 at Cranwell was attacked and burnt.
A second was torched in the south of the county in the early hours of Sunday, September 4 at Whaplode, also on the A17.
Initial estimates of the damage caused to the pair of cameras is in excess of £15,000.
John Siddle, communications manager with Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “It will take a vast amount of money to repair the damage caused which would have been used in the road safety education we deliver in schools and colleges in the county.
“Whatever people may think of these cameras, they are safety devices. Our worry is that before we are able to get these all operational someone will die as a result.” He added: “This is the 16th attack this year. “We are currently refurbishing all the damaged cameras and bringing them back on-line.”
Of the 50 cameras in Lincolnshire, 17 have suffered criminal damage due to arson attacks, including five of the 12 in the Sleaford area in the last two years.
Crimestoppers are offering a reward of £1,000. Anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Makes you wonder how we ever managed to lower KSI on the roads before speed cameras doesn't it

What a silly thing John Siddle says, 'someone may die' ! They might have an accident (& die - to be dramatic!), with the camera presence as a direct effect of change in behaviour due to the direct result that the camera is there.
