£1,000 reward to catch speed camera arsonists
Published on Tuesday 6 September 2011 16:38

Torched, the burnt out remains of the speed camera beside the A17 at Cranwell.

A ONE thousand pound reward is being offered for information leading to the capture and prosecution of arsonists responsible for destroying speed cameras in the county after another camera in the Sleaford area was attacked.
On the night of August 24, at around 11.30pm, a speed camera on the A17 at Cranwell was attacked and burnt.
A second was torched in the south of the county in the early hours of Sunday, September 4 at Whaplode, also on the A17.

Initial estimates of the damage caused to the pair of cameras is in excess of £15,000.
John Siddle, communications manager with Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “It will take a vast amount of money to repair the damage caused which would have been used in the road safety education we deliver in schools and colleges in the county.
“Whatever people may think of these cameras, they are safety devices. Our worry is that before we are able to get these all operational someone will die as a result.” He added: “This is the 16th attack this year. “We are currently refurbishing all the damaged cameras and bringing them back on-line.”

Of the 50 cameras in Lincolnshire, 17 have suffered criminal damage due to arson attacks, including five of the 12 in the Sleaford area in the last two years.
Crimestoppers are offering a reward of £1,000. Anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
l What do you think about the speed camera vandals?

Makes you wonder how we ever managed to lower KSI on the roads before speed cameras doesn't it  What a silly thing John Siddle says, 'someone may die' ! They might have an accident (& die - to be dramatic!), with the camera presence as a direct effect of change in behaviour due to the direct result that the camera is there.

12 in the Sleaford area...

It's only a small town!

Why not leave the cameras "off-line" and spend all the money on road safety education?

Indeed and why throw bad money after even worse and offer £1000 to catch the culprits. Surely, on balance, that money would be better spend on road safety initatives rather than on catching heroes, errrm, I mean vandals? After all, someone might die!

Sad that he fails to realise that people are dying directly (presence), and indirectly (effects) from speed cameras and the whole policy & industry.
If courses are 'so good' then why are they not provided to the whole Motoring Body ?
If so much damage in the recent years shows that people are learning from these courses then this goes to show how bad 'education' and guidance has been over the last 18yrs so this needs to be sorted out properly. People need reminders and education 'films' to remind them what is good driver/rider behaviour and this is rare these days.

Slightly off topic, but I haven't seen a green cross code advert for years. Maybe they do exist. I don't watch kids' TV or tune in at the times that they would presumably screen one but as far as I know this stratagy has been dropped. I know they do work in schools, but unfortunately these days children are more likely to listen to a TV than a visiting speaker. The green cross code/stop, look and listen has undoubtedly safed thousands and thousands of children's lives. The fact that something so simple and cost effective that has such a wide impact is sidelined today makes no sense to me.

Part of that facility was introduced as the TV companies or Broadcasters had 'spare' capacity and especially when they 'shut down' overnight.
With the advent of many channels (espicially the advertising one's) and a 24/7 provision everything is 'bought' and so a Gov that now wishes to 'advertise' has to buy the time, although many charities can purchase at substantially cheaper rates. I do reckon that the Gov could easily arrange a rate suitable and beneficial to the public and greater good. :)

It could. They advertise on the BBC when there is a general election, so why not use the beeb for things of far greater importance than politics? Also, surely the other channels would like to be seen to help such a cause? The other issue is we spend on/generate millions from speed cameras, why can we not spend some of that cash on a simple advert? It doesn't have to be fancy or 'attention grabbing' with CGI dinosaurs and lazers. Just the same message it always had. Stop, Look and Listen (even SPLINK was too complex  ).

I'd presume some kind of license is required to broadcast TV in this country? That being the case make it a condition of the license that slots for public information have to be made available.
