Motorists can now download a free trial version of Road Pilot's smartphone app, which turns your mobile phone into a full speed camera locator.

The app works with all Nokia smartphones including the N95, N82 and E75, and all Blackberry devices. Road Pilot is also working on a version for Apple's iPhone and Android-compatible handsets.

When in use the app displays a speedometer on your phone's screen and alerts you visually and audibly when approaching a speed camera or if you exceed the speed limit.

Another feature is a real-time alert facility, which enables you to notify other Road Pilot users of specific mobile speed camera sites by tapping an icon on the screen.

Road Pilot boasts that it has one of the most accurate databases available, with its team of surveyors physically visiting each and every fixed camera site. However, not even this can rule out the occasional out of date warning; during our trial there was a persistent 40mph alert on a section of the M25 motorway where any roadworks and mobile cameras have long since been cleared up.

If you've got a compatible handset you can download the free trial version of the Road Pilot app, which gives full functionality for a period of three months from Nokia's Ovi store or Blackberry App World.

All Nokia smartphones come with speed camera warning app installed already. It's part of the satnav application.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Only time I've ever been in a vehicle with a satnav giving warnings of cameras,I found I'd spotted them before the warning .Perhaps it's the fact that I've never used satnav or similar ,but the only ones that've bothered me were the one in the early days(Reading i think)where the Gatso markings were on the side of the kerb, and the nastyest van placement opposite the pub on the Rugby side of Kilsby .
