The Times today had an article and a supportive editorial extoling the virtures of continuing with Speed Cameras funded by the proceeds from Speed Awareness Courses rather than the fine income. This is related to the "relaxation" of the speed levels above which you can be offered a course rather than a conviction. All of this is supported by ACPO, of course, who have a financial interest and also cannot be seen to admit they might have been wrong all this time.

The claim that "800 lives a year are saved by cameras" was trotted out along with the "increased speeding in Wiltshire after the cameras were switched off " assertion but no mention was made about evidence of any sort that KSIs had actually been affected in any way.

The usual "it's obvious that lower speeds are good" thinking was on display.

IMO, pitiful reporting.

I have sent a letter to the Times about the invidious nature of funding speed cameras from the proceeds of speed awareness courses. It probably won't be published, but we live in hope...

When are they going to learn that lower speeds are as a result of increased danger, and that reducing speeds does not remove the danger?
