Heed your speed on the A71

SPEEDING drivers on the A71 near Kilmarnock – you are being watched.
That is the message from the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership which has been operating mobile cameras on this busy route since the beginning of March 2010.

Inspector Drew Robertson of Strathclyde Police, said: “Although there are safety camera sites on this road on either side of the Moorfield roundabout, we are most concerned at the behaviour of drivers who blatantly ignore the 50mph speed limit on the east side.
“In recent weeks we have seen far too many people in this situation and they are now paying the legal penalties.
“The purpose of the cameras isn’t to catch motorists out but to deter drivers from speeding and thereby reduce accidents and casualties.
“Kilmarnock will continue to be visited regularly by a camera van, both on weekdays and weekends so the message is clear – ‘heed your speed’.”
Councillor Bobby McDill said: “We are shocked at the number of motorists who speed on this road without any thought for the safety of others.
“This road has a history of crashes and casualties and it is just not acceptable for people to drive in this fashion. Crashes can most frequently be put down to people driving without proper care or too fast.
“Every measure we can take to cut drivers speeding on our roads will reduce the risk of someone being hurt, injured or killed.”

Obviously they fail to completely understand anything about 'speed' and 'speeding' and what makes a safe driver. Speed compliance does not necessarily make a motorist safe. They fail to understand or even consider in these statements the 85th percentile and how that influences road safety. It is so one sided and ill conceived no wonder crashes continue.
