Hate the damn things. I understand it is hard to let go of your independence, but not at the expense of everyone else.

Applying the same principle maybe we need compulsory training and insurance for pedal cyclists

The facts of this report MUST be wrong - BRAKE, the DfT and SCPs would have us believe that if you drive slowly enough, no harm will befall anybody! Only SPEED kills!

I think I would be seeking a certificate of competency, along with a medical before the riders (am I allowed to call them that without arousing the displeasure of the HATO HQ??) are allowed on the streets - for their OWN safety, as much as that of others.

My father in law had a leg amputated last year (2009), and purchased a disability scooter second hand.

On the day it was delivered, he was so carried away with his new found freedom to roam, he did not give [his] safety a thought, and disappeared off down a busy rural road - with a surprising turn of speed, and no trial run to see how it handled or stopped.

I later provided him with a hi-vis vest - which he would not wear, so I fastened it over the back of the seat, affording at least some visibility to other drivers (sorry - "road users").

There are no brakes - only a dynamic brake which comes on fairly hard if you release the hand lever throttle - or you can throw it into reverse by simply squeezing the reverse lever.

In order to effect a gentle slow down, one has to slowly release the pressure on the "go" lever... which without good coordination will no doubt lead to a few mishaps.

If any of you are interested enough, I recommend you go and take one for a test run! You will certainly view them differently afterwards, as I have. Whilst not fast, there is a good deal of power in the motor, and they cannot be stopped by standing in front of one!
