I am a professional driver with a squeaky clean licence held for over forty years - but I am becoming very angry concerning wrong/confusing contractors speed limit signs.

On the westerly section of the M25 work is underway to add a forth lane. This section is controlled by the Variable Speed Limit system so the overhead gantries often flash 40mph while the contractors signs indicate National Speed Limit ie 70mph.

At a new road junction near my home the contractors sign indicates National Speed Limit but is within a permanent 40mph zone.

This apalling contradiction of speed limit signs is becoming all too frequent throughout our road system.

I am becoming very angry that nobody seems to control the incorrect use of temporary contractors speed signs and that many motorists are penalised because of the authorities lack of care.Equally as signage is so often badly used, incorrect, or confusing that drivers will ignore them as being wrong which they often are.

Does anybody know who controls the use of temporary contractors speed signage, what is the law governing their legitimacy, and has anybody tested the situation in court ?

The local highways authority are responsible for generating the tempoary speed limit and seeing they are signed correctly.

They have the power to shut roadworks down over incorrect traffic mnagement. A letter to the chief exec of the council ought (but probobly wont) do the job.

A phone call to the Highway Engineer would probably get faster results.
