England footballer Jermain Defoe has had a stay of execution from losing his driving licence after an apparent police speed camera blunder.
The 26-year-old Tottenham Hotspur striker was due to appear in court today where he was expected to lose his driving licence after being found guilty of two counts of speeding and two charges of not telling police who was driving his £70,000 car.
But the sentencing has been adjourned for two weeks after it was revealed a speed camera team worker involved in the case may not have been authorised to sign legal paperwork.

If this turns out to be the case, it could affect thousands of drivers who have been snapped by speed cameras in Essex since March 2007.
Celebrity lawyer Nick Freeman, known as Mr Loophole for his success clearing celebrity clients from speeding charges, said: 'The Crown Prosecution Service called me and asked if I would mind adjourning because there could be a problem with Mr Defoe's case. We agreed.'

Defoe from Cuffley in Hertfordshire was found guilty in his absence at Chelmsford Crown Court in May this year.

The court heard his luxury Land Rover was caught on the M11 near Chigwell travelling 81mph and 65mph in a 50mph zone in April and June last year.
He was also found guilty of two counts of not telling police who was behind the wheel at the time.
The charges carry a total of 18 penalty points and the footballer already has six so was likely to lose his licence when he was scheduled to appear at the Chelmsford Magistrates Court today.

There have been more twists in this tale than a fuselli pasta

“It has never been the rule in this country – I hope it never will be - that suspected criminal offences must automatically be the subject of prosecution” He added that there should be a prosecution: “wherever it appears that the offence or the circumstances of its commission is or are of such a character that a prosecution in respect thereof is required in the public interest”
