My quest to turn up a sensible aspect to the management of the roads round these parts continues to disappoint. It seems that when (after a serious amount of deterioration has been allowed) the roads here (Cambs) are resurfaced the technique adopted is a tad 3rd world! (no offence to those 3rd world countries that are now overtaking the UK with regard to infrastructure investment)!

What happens is that the billions of pounds paid in tax for road repair is used as follows: A truck sprays a load of tar everywhere (which is great for ruining car paint, shoes and carpets), then a load of viscious paint chipping projectiles (gravel) are thrown about the place in the hope that passing traffic will eventually create a new road!

5 miles worth of '10mph' signs are hammered into the verges, and off you go. Your car will be chipped underneath, ready for a nice bit of winter rusting, chipped on top (bonnet/roof,doors), to lower its resale value even more than the insane roadtax proposals already have, and the windscreen will be pock-marked nicely ready to fail the next MOT.

Then the coup-de-grace: After that lots done its worst, and the tar has gone a bit scabby, chuck a load more gravel onto the scabby bits (including the middle of corners) to see how many people you can get to skid off into the field as they meet the sudden 'marbles' feature added to simulate the hairpin at the last Canadian Grandprix.

You couldn't make it up!
