Kielty due in court over 101mph speeding charge
Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Northern Ireland funnyman Patrick Kielty will face a speeding charge in court next month, it was decided last night.
The Dundrum-born television presenter - pictured on a night out with good friend Denise Van Outen - is accused of driving at 101mph on a notorious road in the south of Scotland on December 27 last year.
Kielty (37), who recently co-hosted the BBC's Sport Relief, was stopped by police on the A75 Gretna to Stranraer road in Dumfries and Galloway and is alleged to have been travelling at 41mph over the limit.
The A75 links the Irish ferry ports of Stranraer and Cairnryan with the British motorway routes and links up at Gretna with the M74.
The case against Kielty was due to be heard at Stranraer Sheriff Court yesterday.
But a court official said the hearing had been put back to April 22.
Kielty, who was not in court yesterday, is now expected to make a plea on that date.
He has just finished a stint at Belfast's Grand Opera House where he starred in A Night in November.
Kielty first started his career in Belfast Empire Comedy Club as a student at Queen's University.
Since then he has gone on to become a household name across the UK after fronting hit shows such as Fame Academy and Celebrity Love Island.
He has also been honoured by Queen's for his services to performing arts.
In October last year however he was forced to apologise over controversial jokes made about Kate and Gerry McCann and their missing daughter Madeleine.
Members of a Dublin audience walked out of his stand-up show after they were asked to vote on the McCanns' innocence.
He later defended himself, saying: "As a comedian, one thing you always do when you walk out on stage is, you talk about what's going on in the week's news."
