I have a question please for all the site users who are familiar with the A40 westbound out of London. You are all hopefully aware of the Gatso speed camera immediately on the left as you come out of the Hanger lane underpass. I have not used that stretch of the A40 for a while, but yesterday noticed that just near the speed camera there is a new very tall pole with an overhang over the lane nearest the camera with 5 silver cylindrical objects looking down onto the road. Can someone tell me what on earth these things are?

They would (almost certainly, given your description) be ANPR cameras, which have been sprouting all over London in recent weeks (and, as I noticed last weekend, up north in Newcastle as well). Don't worry, you have nothing to fear, just continue to be a good little citizen and let the Mother State take care of you, safe in the knowledge that your every move is being recorded for future reference just in case something untoward should ever happen to you... bet you feel safer and more secure already, don't you

Thanks Twister, I did have an uneasy feeling about these camera's and remember reading about proposed plans to monitor our movements 24/7.We do live in a very sick society where a few totally paranoid, obsessed individuals are allowed to push this sort of KGB type surveillance onto the country. Reading about the massive opposition to the Manchester Road pricing scheme It amazes me that something that is so much more sinister is scheduled for the entire UK and nobody seems to care!

The irony, of course, is that for a small but significant fee I can provide simple ways of stopping the tracking being effective. Similarly the mobile phone network tracks movements/personal interaction but can be avoided. So another huge amount of cash goes to some government contractor for little gain.

I've noticed these cameras too. They're white and seem to be capable of monitoring all lanes of traffic. I've not seen them in pairs (perhaps the second set still needs to be erected) so they can't be a new type of the SPECS system - but it seems they could easily be adapted to speed monitoring. Is there anywhere we can find out more information about these new cameras?????

I've seen more of these cameras (near Heathrow) and they don't come in pairs. Plus the fact they are not bright yellow means they probably won't be used as speed cameras.

How come we've not heard more about these cameras on the news? Thought they would report this!

As per original post there is now an identical set-up on the opposite side of the A40(heading into london) just before Hanger lane. these however are forward facing scanning the front number plates.
