I don't think this has been posted before. Apologies if it has.

I'm surprised the prat didn't carry on "enforcing" the opposite carriageway, or just drive off to take money from drivers on a different safe dual carriageway ("Nothing to do with me if an accident happens, and anyway I've got targets to meet"). Maybe he was required to stay there and give a statement, and he was off to fill the coffers some more as soon as possible.

Or maybe, just maybe, his conscience was pricked and he was in shock. If that incident results in him giving up his non-job, at least something good will have come of it.

No doubt that the van driver will still get a ticket as normal if he was clocked at 68mph or above (assuming the road was NSL; it looks like it should be, although of course that's no guarantee anymore).

I look forward to the day when the first pratnership closes. Something tells me it'll just disappear one day, like the rogue outfits that feature on the likes of Watchdog. Once you've scammed everyone as much as possible, it's time to run before too many people realise what you were up to and come after you. Talking of which, does anyone know why the Hampshire "Safety" Camera Partnership site has been down for a few weeks now? Could this be the best Christmas present motorists have had in years? Anyone round there noticed any vans lately? Anything in Pompey, Smeggers? Anyone noticed the inevitable carnage which would result from their not being around? I just tried phoning them (Friday 28th @ 1445) and it rang out. I'm guessing that doesn't mean much though. Luckily I have no experience of such things, but presumably pratnerships tend to have very restricted "phonable" hours to maximise revenue. Anyway it's 01962 874270 if anyone wants to give it a go at any stage.

I can't say I notice much scamera van activity in our area, possibly because they are well hidden anyway?

Anyway, I was (passenger) on the M3 southbound just after J2, on the 24th Dec 07 anout 12:30, when we happened across this. Can you guess exactly where?

That's right. That barrier you see in the4 first photo is the protection rail for the 2nd set of SPECS cameras (Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to get the cameras in shot too).

That made for good, eye opening, reading, some excellent posters on there, even Paul Callaghans name managed to get a mention.
Perhaps, there are more drivers realising whats going on than we were aware of.

I liked this post in particular:

Following years of bad press and general road user dissatisfaction on a national scale and in spite of repeated assurances and statistics to demonstrate an improvement in road safety, all of which is below expectation and falls on the deaf ears of the critics and has caused an epidemic of mistrust and hatred toward the traditional speed camera.

The Safety Camera partnerships have announced today that they are about to release a new type of device that they hope can improve road safety even more than they claim the old speed cameras did and heal the rift with the motorist.

This new device contains a much higher degree of “Intelligent Surveillance” capable of making thousands of decisions and has special sensors allowing them to be aware of weather conditions and are no longer limited to the panacea of a fixed speed limit. But can also adjust and take into account bad light and local driving condition, a long standing unanswered criticism of fixed safety cameras when arbitrary speed limits were first thought to be the way forward, but where they are often too high when faced with fog, night driving, heavy rain, snow or ice.

These new devices and are also equipped with many special sensors that make it capable of spotting potentially dangerous or erratic behaviour even when speeding is not a factor. They can scan a number plate even when stationary and instantly check it against a national database for stolen cars and as they’re mobile will be able to track offenders who may be tired, under the influence of alcohol or drugs and a spatial acuity sensor allows detection of drivers distracted by suspicious behaviour inside the vehicle.

Another onboard component allows for visual or audible detection of potentially defective motor vehicles, that traditional cameras wouldn’t have been able to see, further reducing the likelihood of an accident.

A very impressive step forward was also unveiled when a technology called ARS “Accident Recognition System”, which alerts the emergency services such as the Fire service and ambulance if an accident is detected.

Trials of this device were very successful initially, but this system was shelved as believed to be too expensive when compared to the rather basic, but functional and profitable cameras we’ve been used to up to now.

Several project names were originally put forward for this device, but the government eventually settled on something all drivers would be able to accept and to recognise as a great step forward in road safety and a benefit to the community as a whole.

Project “Deploy Real Police Officers” goes live as soon as safety spin hysteria and camera partnership resistance is back under control.

****

Text book example of a loss of clarity, common sense and reason where corrupt politics have been allowed to take over.
