Something the scamerati keep banging on about, isn't it? "Make speeding as unacceptable as drink driving" and all that.

Well actually, it just occurred to me the other day that they are changing the way we think, and here's the evidence:

As I left the house to drive off to a business meeting, my wife's parting words were "watch you don't get caught speeding". Sound advice, yes?

But as I drove off it crossed my mind that she usually says that to me these days, whereas a few years ago she would have said "drive carefully" or words to that effect.

An innocent remark, maybe a sub-conscious one, but an interesting basis for discussion I think. As a starting point:

* What does that tell us about the change in the way we set priorities? How many of us now consider "not getting caught speeding" as being a bigger issue than "not having an accident"?
* How does that actually affect our safety when driving?
* Which message would be of most benefit, when displayed on a Smiley SID: "Slow Down", or "Take Care"?

They are changing our priorities. I reckon it's bloody dangerous. I reckon there's a clear correlation between the average driver's priorities and our national effectiveness at crash avoidance. Any false safety message is going to cause dangerous distortions.

It's also interesting that the message is "don't get caught speeding", not "don't break the speed limit", which is what the scamerati want.

Does this represent an acceptance in the mind of Joe Public that everybody speeds to some extent, and the important thing is not to get caught doing it?

I find that when talking about driving at workin the office most people talk about speed cameras and the way to avoid them and where they are parked up instead of how people are driving ont he roads and wyas to improve things.
Seems like most people are now only worried about speed cameras.
We get a lot of suppliers visiting us and most of them come in bitch!ng about one speed camera or the other and the way everyong hits the brakes just before it.
The whole subject of driving and saftey seems to be only related to speed now.

Well, it could be that your wife is simply latching onto your heigthened interest in the subject through, amonst other things probably, participation in this forum. She knows how you feel about it an made a remark that was attuned to you, rather than her own feelings on the subject.
