Heard a brief report on yesterday's news that the Chief Constable of The Northern Constabulary in the Highlands had been caught by one of his own scams. Any one else hear it :?

Invite him along to SS! As PS has said, it is extremely unlikely that the CC was driving in an unsafe manner...

He said he had "made a mistake", adding: "On July 1, in daylight on a clear open stretch of road on the A9, I miscalculated my speed, which was seen to be a maximum of 72mph within a 60mph limit.

Since when do we calculate our speed? Don't Range Rovers have a speedometer?

Before we mocketh too much though, I don't think he should be prosecuted any more any of us for a similar offence. I'm sure he was doing a safe speed for the conditions but trying to get this message across to pro-scameraites is like trying to pass a camel through the eye of a needle.

(I think I just invented a new word)

You will be branded a threat to society by going over a speed limit where it is safe to do so, and suffer the consequences of your actions in a way criminals do not, more so than someone who is a real threat to our society.

This quote "On July 1, in daylight on a clear open stretch of road on the A9" says it all really. He obviously like many of us was driving safely for the conditions and the actions of the scameras on an open stretch of clear road ony indicates that they are there for money not safety reasons. If it was for safety they would be on a stretch where it was unsafe to do 72MPH.

Why does'nt he press forward with " I felt it safe to do this" rather than guilty as charged.

Come on admit CC it is an unfair charge and millions are suffering this each year.

Because you see, he is guilty as charged. Laws are always legal, because they are enacted correctly by parliament. Driving safely is not a defence against the law, but a demonstration of why the law should be changed!

this is where the CPS code is being ignored (but only for motoring & smoking)
http://www.cps.gov.uk/publications/docs ... nglish.pdf

Quote:
THE PUBLIC INTEREST STAGE
5.6 In 1951, Lord Shawcross, who was Attorney General, made
the classic statement on public interest, which has been
supported by Attorneys General ever since: “It has never been
the rule in this country — I hope it never will be — that
suspected criminal offences must automatically be the subject
of prosecution”. (House of Commons Debates, volume 483,
column 681, 29 January 1951.)

“It has never been the rule in this country – I hope it never will be - that suspected criminal offences must automatically be the subject of prosecution” He added that there should be a prosecution: “wherever it appears that the offence or the circumstances of its commission is or are of such a character that a prosecution in respect thereof is required in the public interest”
This approach has been endorsed by Attorney General ever since 1951. CPS Code

I know the road quite well and I don't think that 72 mph is unreasonable along most of the roads length, even for a "stranger" like me.
What IS unreasonable is the lack of white line painting and cats eye maintenance in such a northerly area.

As for the CC, well, ......... hoisted by his own petard I suppose. Well done though for taking the hit, let's hope that he is one of those who "speaks out" after his retirement about the insanity of a road safety policy which has seen Britain fall from 1st to 17th in world rankings......
