Having just been watching the news and heard that the terrorists have been using our road network to transport themselves and their devices to opposite ends of the country, I wondered if anyone else feels that this raises a very valid point about the lack of true police presence on our roads.

It fills me with no confidence at all that the two lunatics who botched their attempt on Glasgow Airport had to drive through the jurisdication of the Dumfries & Galloway Constabulary. They are highly unlikely to detect any suspicous behaviour, bomb-making equipment or generally any other common sense clues as their 'SAFETY' (Speed Administration Fines are Expensive To You) cameras are a bit of a 'one-trick-pony' and they just might have had an NIP in the post if they had been in a bit of a hurry.

As you can see there is a degree of contempt for the cameras but you can see the underlying point about us relying on speed cameras, in these difficult times for what should still be core officer duties.

Regards,

Scott

The whole point on here ---

Traffic officers don't just ticket - they might decide to stop ,and what do they find ????. Cameras just ticket.

All the garbage about ANPR - great stuff , but it says "deny the criminal the use of the road " -----hmm the old fashioned bobby 20+ years ago did that, with only a car ,a radio and some old fashioned police instincts ( look at how it's done in Durham , as per IG posts --still works today )

i'm not sure why this vehicle in particular would have had any more reason than thousands of others to get pulled over.

unless a trafpol happens to run the reg and finds it stolen/uninsured etc.
or unless they were driving dangerously (not the best idea in a 4x4 full of explosive substances i'd guess).

unless there was a specific known threat & a heck of a lot of police (like we're now seeing on approach to most airports) i can't see how it would have helped in this case. the current level of security & policing with the threat level at 'critical' is clearly not sustainable.

plod in person are reactive and proactive (preventative) to a whole range of crimes.

cameras, in the case of speed cameras etc are reactive to specific offences, and while CCTV has limited ability to be used proactively in reality it's a reactive tool used to collect evidence.

This marks a shift towards clearing up after crimes than trying to prevent them, and despite all their claims about CCTV being an "anti-terrorist" tool actually shifts the emphasis towards petty crimes- a CCTV can't stop a terrorist blowing himself up and mr. terrorist is past caring about his image being recorded, but they sure are good for noting down number plates and catching parking "violations" "committed" by persons that do have to care.
