I think we should get speeding into perspective and clear up some thoughts.

I am a honest law abiding citizen, who tries his best to keep within the speed limits, and drive safely.

I have full no claims discount, until recently I did not have any speeding convictions, nor for that matter any road offences ever, including parking!

I am glad to see police officers in marked police cars patrolling our roads and back streets.

I like to see the marked police cars on motorways.

I like to see marked police cars parked up watching the traffic.

I think mobile speed cameras around schools, is a good idea, provided they are visible and act as a deterent as much as enforcing speed limits. (providing it is within term time).

This is not what is happening, which is a real shame.

The British public are now becoming really disenchanted with the whole system.

No longer is the honest British bobby pulling drivers over for speeding and either issuing a ticket or offering wise words to drivers, which is enough of a deterent for me.

It is very rare to see a policeman now, I do not know where they have all gone!

Nowadays, the police seem to have lost touch with the great British public.

When a car is pulled over by the police, the police should be thinking about crime and catching villans who are driving around robbing peoples houses and businesses.

My friend told me the other day that the people who sit in the back of the camera vans are not policemen, but police employees. If this is the case we might as well have the local council running the camera vans, like they have taken over most of the parking wardens. This is the type of thing that is happening now.

We see camera vans parked on grass verges, motorway bridges, motorway patrol car sidings (are they allowed to do that!), central reservations, hiding behind bushes, hiding behind street signs / parked cars. This is really sneaky and snyde, not what the slient majority of the British public want.

WE WANT HONESTY AND INTEGRITY. This is the most important thing.

I think that the police's approach to this whole matter is really wrong. Gone is the contact with the police. Now we have the police or their employees stuck in the back of a van, anonymous.

ARE THEY SCARED TO TALK TO THE GREAT BRITISH PUBLIC, have they got something to hide?

Since I received my speeding ticket I have been watching where the speed vans are and I am now totally disillusioned with the police and how they operate the camera van system.

I have seen the vans hidden away in places where there is no danger whatsoever to pedestrians. Where there has been no accidents. Where there is no need for a van. Where there are no pedestrians / cyclists.

I have seen vans on open stretches of road, where there is no problem whatsoever, but it is good to place to catch the unsuspecting motorist.

THIS IS PURELY A MONEY MAKING VENTURE.

Why is it that the speed vans do not work in the evenings getting the boy racers, who plague our lives, are flying around our estates.

I am a strong supporter of the police, however if they continue using such snyde / sneaky methods then I am afraid they are loosing my faith in them.

HonestCitizen,
I agree with most of what you say, but as far as I am aware most of the speed enforcement thesedays is done by civilians and have nothing to do with the police. I speak from my own forces point of view and yes I would say it is time to get rid of the speed cameras and get back to good old fashioned policing, but between me and you those days have gone and I would go as far as to say.
The traffic cop is slowly getting less and less, in a few years time you will only see Traffic PCSOs doing enforcement everywhere, ie speed,DVLA seizures, ANPR etc. and the police officer will just wait for someone to get killed then turn out from the office and investigate it.
This is only my opinion on what I see within the job around me remember you heard it here first.
Stephen

honest-citizen,

:welcome:

Many of us here share your concerns, and more besides.

My main concern is that these policies have singularly failed to make the roads safer, and have replaced policies that provided long term reliable improvements.

The biggest tragedy of all is when I hear the 'clueless' likes of Stephen ladyman and his minions spouting total tripe that speed-camera's are not hidden, that vans are in full view, that they save lives etc....... how can someone in his position be so clueless (hang on though, he would be out of a job if he dared admit the truth) you only have to drive around to see exactly the sort of dishonest, underhand tactics used on our roads in the name of safety.(sorry that should read revenue generation for this saddest most corrupt government in my memory).
