Per the "MEN" headline last night as relayed by my sisters who know this area very well.

MEN Headline on 8 Feb wrote:
Police launch DIY speed trap
Paul Britton

DIY speedcamVILLAGERS are being given radar guns by police to target speeding motorists.

Ten people in Ramsbottom are to be specially trained to use the hand-held speed guns - the first trial of the `DIY' scheme in Greater Manchester.

The volunteers, wearing bright fluorescent jackets, will work in pairs. One will aim the gun at an oncoming car and press the trigger to measure the speed, while the other will write down the car registration, time and location.

Advertisement your story continues below

Warning letters will be sent to anyone caught breaking the limit.

The evidence cannot be used in court, but if the collected data suggests there is a problem area, police will take action - resulting in possible fines or prosecution. Sgt Dean Memory said the scheme could be extended across Greater Manchester if successful.

He added: "The results will be passed to police to see if there is a speed problem. If there is, traffic units would be sent in, which could result in action. The community is helping us get the evidence. We will let drivers know this is happening and there will be no hiding behind bushes. It is an evidence-gathering exercise."

Training sessions begin on Saturday and the scheme will be launched in March.

Problem

The idea came from a meeting of residents. Co-ordinator Kim Griffiths said locals feared speeding drivers were `an accident waiting to happen'.

She said: "We hope this might be a way to solve the problem.

"There were reservations, but residents are happy to do it as a pilot and see what happens."

Nuttall Lane and Whittingham Drive, on the Broadhey Estate, will be targeted first, but other areas may also be included.

Operations can be carried out at any time in daylight. Volunteers will carry leaflets to explain what they are doing and all checkpoints will be signposted.

Area Insp Bryn Williams said: "Residents are determined to stop speeding and are doing something positive. Hopefully, this will inspire more to help."

Similar successful schemes have already been run in Cheshire and in Avon and Somerset.

My sisters both say it is not possible to speed through Ramsbottom. Because of the layout of the road .. They both say it feels like urban 'burb .. and has lots of traffic lights and pelicans.

So, boy racers, get out after dark!

Apparently, only during the day. They don't care about the evenings.

What a bunch of misguided fools.

Tell me boys, do people have a choice about whether they speed or not? Isn't it odd how none of the loud-mouth fascist speedfreaks who come on here never respond to this question. But we all know the answer don't we boys! And please MEN, it's not a "trap", it's a deterrent for the purpose of making the village safer.

This is just another part of the War Against Motorists let's hope it encourages more people to join the car party and to vote for us at the ballot box. Treating 33 million people like criminals will turn them to act like criminals.

Not the brightest of ideas was it! The principal is probably well intentioned but certainly not thought through. As previously said, put the resources into ridding the town of violent thugs, vandals and druggies.

"if the collected data suggests there is a problem area, the police will take action" so the people have been listened to,a problem has been identified and recognised (or else why this "action") and the response is to put speed cameras in the hands of civilians with the ultimate end of generating letters??! at the risk of making some sence if the problem has been acknowledged by the police why dont they just send a traffic car down there for a few hours over a few weeks, hand out some tickets and i'm sure that would cure things. why is the middle man needed?

There is one absolute way to stop drivers from speeding - RAISE THE SPEED LIMIT. Who is going to go crying to whom when one of these 'civilians' gets beaten to a pulp by somebody who has been working hard all day, is just about earning a living, and has just been tipped over the edge?

Just a thought for you: Number of Speed Cameras Austria: 686 Belgium: 142 Czech Republic: 42 Finland: 433 France: 756 United Kingdom: 3,951 Italy: 717 Netherlands: 1,409 Norway: 323 Poland: 322 Spain: 393 Sweden: 675 And this is in a country with the safest roads in Europe? Lets get real this is just another money making gimmick, if the politicians were really bothered they would ensure more traffic police. But alas thats real cost, and I've never seen a speed camera catch a drink driver or some lunatic driving the real menace on our roads.

With the sighting of police now rarer than hens teeth these village idiots will soon be complaining when the real crime rates rise because the police are locked away safely in their police stations that are never open as it is. Just another excuse for them to warm their backsides doing all the paperwork associated with speeding fines. "If you want to ask the time ask a policeman"!! Well where the hell are they all then ? For anyone who's never seen a real policeman tune into "Crimewatch" BBC1 9.00 o'clock tonight where you'll see loads of them asking the public to solve the real serious crimes that are being committed whilst they're spending their time teaching village idiots how to use a ray gun on what must be the new equivalent to the Kray twins..

Being a resident of Nuttall Lane I am fully aware of the speeding motorists who think they are at 'Brands Hatch' and I fully support this project. The worst times for speeding are between 10.30 and 12 midnight on Friday Saturday and Sunday evenings, with some some motorists reaching upto 70mph. Its a wonder no one has been killed on this stretch. It's a brilliant idea.

I will bet illegal chavs at that time of night  My sisters have pal in that area. They and their pal sometimes .. per their accounts.. set the world to rights into wee small hours .. but have never seen 70 mph at weekends when they socialise with their pal (a fellow teacher) and his pals and family.

This stretch of road must be a real concern for local residents-but it probably doesn't qualify for a fixed speed camera as there probably havn't been enough accidents although speeds must be high for this type of action. The best thing for drivers to do who use this road is to drive a bit slower and make sure you don't kill or injure anyone. Cos if you do then you may see a yellow gatso in place of the yellow jackets-and this time you won't get a warning in the post but a fixed penalty. Try not to view these people as little Nazis but as potential casualties who are trying to solve a problem which affects them on a daily basis. I've seen this type of approach work in reducing speeds without the need of fining people.

Im totally against speeding ,but im more against using speedind as just another tax on the motorists? And to get vigilaties to do their work is yet another insult to drivers? Lets train people to assault burglers or train the public to arrest pedos Ect and keep a eye on the child molesters? Weve been told to leave these perverts alone??WHY. we spy on our motorists why not go the full way and use people to watch over these perverts? (BECAUSE THERE IS NO MONEY IN IT )

why would some muppet offer to stand there with a gun and catch their mates speeding. There has hardly been any crashes in rammy anyway so why not do it somewhere where there is alot of car thefts and crashes. Ridiculous idea. These residents need a slap. busy bodies who havent got out better to do. get a life.

Gary Numan Your havin a laugh. Either that or you've missed the point of the headline. If there is a serious speeding problem in the area then it is the police who should be dealing with it, not wanabecops with nothing better to do. I acknowledge that police resourses are stretched and they prioritise all jobs but putting these wanabecops out will do nothing to stop the speeding. I like most others would like to think I drive safely and within the law, but I would accept that at times there may be occasions when my driving may fall below what is expected. But if you really think someone with nothing better to do and absalutely no power to enforce what their doing, and the promise of a nasty letter from the Chief Constable will worry me then you've got eggshells for brains. And I respect the law. So what do you think the response from some dirt bag would be? The government should be providing more money for more police not trying to get away with policing on the cheap with wanabecops

Gary Numan, Your wrong, the biggest danger is the pedestrians who can't seem to recognise the difference between the pavement and the road. Speed is not the only cause of accidents on the roads today. Poor driving standards and pedistrian in-attention cause far more accidents than speeding, and the facts are there to prove it. Stop pedistrians and the accident rate will come crashing down.

I live near a police responce unit maybe we need one on this street? i see cars screaming up and down the street when we have kids playing in the area(openshaw) I think the council should put a speed camera on this street and maybe it would slow the police down in a residential area.???

An interesting by-product of this sceme is a de facto increase in pedestrian numbers, albeit yellow-jacket wearing local busibodies.

Increasing pedestrian numbers increases the risk of a KSI to a greater degree than increasing speedo numbers, if I read the DfT figures correctly, therefore they should take themselves off the streets in order to make them safer.

See, I can play with numbers too!

Why not send them out with a digital camera to photograph possible drug-dealers near schools and outside night-clubs?
Oh, no, they would be called vigilantees and that wouldn't do at all.

When I lived in Radcliffe I used to cycle through Rammy all the time. Usually headed up Rawson's Rake (if you check the map, its directly northwest of Whittingham Drive just on the other side of the main road.

Its a 1 in 3, and with a 42:21 gear ratio I rarely made it up :D Its awesome, and the road at the top is really nice too, I used to use that road and turn off up towards Darwen, before heading back home. Those were the days when I was a fit young lad :D

Anyhow, there are plenty of boy racers around those parts and I would trust that the residents are correct, that there may be a speeding issue.

The answer is not to send people out with cameras. The answer is to sort out the minority of scrotes who are responsible, and only the Police can do that. I reckon the blue rinses will be safely tucked in bed when the bean can brigade are roaring through their estate.

And if they really must send out these people, they should be putting them on Bass Lane, you're dicing with death speeding down there.

From past history, these busy-bodies tend only to catch a good few locals who may just take exception at being spied upon by their neighbours. In any event, the system is flawed - not to say divisive and can only lead to a further erosion of the dreadfully strained police/public relationship

Ace Riley from Manchester, if you want to see really crazy driving by police down residential roads (often just to get back for breakfast) you should live in Uxbridge, middx.Even when they are not responding to emergencies they mostly all break the speed limit.

Maybe if there were more high-ranking police officers actually living in Ramsbottom there wouldn't be this denial that there is any crime taking place in this area! Just a thought... As for the public doing the police force's job for them (unpaid, presumably) - am I missing the point here? Don't we already pay the police for (not) doing their job as it is? I chose my username carefully. Mmmm...
