Sorry Tone, I was posssibly being a bit simplistic in my analysis. Movement due to hills is gradual whilst movement due to braking is more abrupt and your circuit can easily distinguish.

Your 'bike alarm is very clever though. Perhaps is could be extended to protect cheese from predators.

I think that the way brake lights operate now is just right. If people had brake lights coming on just for lifting of the accelerator you would have people on twisty roads lifting off continuosly and the flashing of brake lights would be annoying to a following driver...I think we've all followed the "numpty" who brakes at every slight thing, where the majority of drivers would just lift off throttle and maybe cover the brake pedal...isn't it annoying? To me when I see a brake light come on I like to assume that the person is going to slow down considerabley or stop because they have seen something ahead which I haven't and warrants slowing considerably for, not just someone who decides they want to slow down by a couple of miles/hour because they are catching or getting too close to the guy in front. I often used to think that it would be nice to have a light or sign saying when the guy in front is accelerating because you always get the odd one who decides to do that just as the road ahead of him becomes clear and he then decides that the 40MPH that he has been crawling at for miles isn't fast enough for him and he wants to now stop you overtaking him safely.....

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road,what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

As a side issue, but related to my original question. This new machines is a 50k model, ie it does 50kph. Now, I'm not realy supposed to go that fast and it is for me to travel at the speed I am permitted to go at, but at lower fuel saving rev's and most definately NOT to speed up haulage, oh no . Anyway, I am reading on ag fora that for 50k, the tractor must have air brakes, brakes on all four wheels, welded wheel centers and ABS on the trailers and that VOSA are getting wise to us. However, The tractors aren't coming from the factories like this. Mine was built in September, the brakes are the normal type, discs on the back axle and 4wd engages when you apply the brakes for 4 wheel braking. It has no air for any air brakes and the non standard wheels have bolted centers. So who's responsibility? Manufacturer, importer, owner, driver? Our trailers have axles rated at 60k, but no ABS, but the brakes are powerful enough to stop the whole unit with out the tractors brakes.
