drove this way at the weekend and saw the poles.

they appear to be for vehicle activated signs, not cameras.
one we passed had an inactive sign mounted on the thin part of the pole with a couple of solar panels above.

anecdotally on the same stretch of road i was in no hurry and happily sat at 55 (musing how silly it was).
chap behind decided to pass, potentially myself and 2 other cars ahead of me . waiting to pull out of a farm entrance was a marked police car so rather than continue the overtake he hung on the anchors in an attempt to get back on the right side of the road before passing the car ahead of me. entertained us no end.

strangely the police car pulled out behind and put the blues on, passed us all (further scaring the overtaker), switched off the blues and disappeared over the horizon.
