Sounds like a knowledgeable reply!!
What's that saying again - The Rolling Stones sang "Hey you get off of my cloud" while Scottish farmers sing "Hey McLeod, get off of my ewe!" :D

I learned all these at college once they found I was from Cumbria - "where men are men, and sheep are nervous!"

You could be correct here. There is plenty of space to overtake and then someone pulls out of the layby without looking.

I know you should look out for junctions etc. as danger points when overtaking but how many of us would hold back when looking at the scene displayed?

From where the photo is taken it looks good visibility for a fair distance.

Looks like there is a lay-by the other side of the water, so may be people looking at traffic on the road but not that there could be vehicles about to pull out of the lay-by.

It also looks like that after the water there are some trees (after the water but before the lay-by) that will then obscure the view further up the road once you've dropped down towards the water, which I presume is the reason for the signs.

Well spotted and analysed, but I'd recommend caution. We'd need to know that the layby was involved from accident reports before we could conclude anything.

In all seriousness, I'd want to know that it wasn't simply a random cluster of crashes before I went any further at all.

Micro-climate. It's what happened to the Rhyl cyclists in reality - and to the cycling club in Bolton that time. The latter is still an on-going case re the passing the buck on the gritting issues :banghead:

If only councils would take the need for gritting seriously - just think how many lives would be saved.

It's not a facetious comment. It's a SERIOUS one.!

By 'eck Ern! I bet's thee eateth real Shepherd's Pies made for real men as well

Sheep have cause to be nervous here  . I admit to nice thoughts of mint.. rosemary.. red wine.. and Wildy's version of Shepherd's pie which is something my own mother wishes she cooked. (Wildy adds some Swiss thing of the Schnaps variety - which "bloweth out a normal mind" .. It seems they have a version of this traditional .. but with some "colour" and I have to say it explodes on taste buds quite positively  )

But seriously think "micro climate from the water" creates a cold patch which can play havoc at times.

I'm reliably informed that the scots started to wear kilts because the sheep learned to recognise the sound of a zip...

No road is any more dangerous than any other - it is an inanimate object that can't be dangerous to anyone. However, let enough stupid drivers down any road and they will find ways to kill themselves.

No such thing as a dangerous road.

I agreed with your sentiments up to this point - a competant driver isn't going to be mis-lead.

If lots of people keep making similar mistakes on the same stretch of road then there probably IS something wrong with the road.

Eh?

If 99.99% of drivers pass this road without crashing, then it proves the road isn't dangerous! Calling this road dangerous is the same mentality that sees a speed limit reduced on a road, because a tiny minority of drivers using it have crashed.

Stupid drivers/riders are the problem.

No such thing as a dangerous road.

So why do some roads have a markedly worse accident rate than others?

Drivers not paying attention, lack of observation, no anticipation or putting their attention on something other than driving.

The road just sits there minding its own business.

The expression 'dangerous road' is surely just a euphemism used to describe a road with an abnormal number of crashes occuring on it. The road as an inanimate object isn't dangerous as such, but it presents certain problems or difficulties for drivers who are not keeping their eye on the ball consistently enough. And that means quite a lot of them IMHO.

Using the term as such helps drivers pass the buck - 'I'm a good driver, but it is a dangerous road'.

True - as long as sufficient clues as to the layout ahead exist.
In this topic... http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=74296#74296 we discussed a particular section of road where accidents occur regularly.
Not just to strangers, but a few locals as well.
I know the road and can identify the causes - but drivers who drive below a certain level get caught out - all times of day, and weather condition - which confirms the road layout itself as a factor.

Until the layout is changed, I asked what signage do we have which would tip off the less competent drivers as to the problem ahead which seems to catch them out.

Sure, don't get me wrong I actually agree with your sentiments. I have the same views on the use of the word "accident" (or, "thats why they are called accidents") to describe collisions between vehicles, or vehicles and roadside scenery.
The word soothes or softens the idea that someone actually screwed up and their actions resulted in the incident occuring. Crashes are seldom pure 'accidents' IMHO.

:yesyes:
Most drivers probably do get away with lack of attention etc., most of the time but when they get to a road that is slightly more 'technical', they can't handle it. Maybe they'll learn one day...
