What safetyman seems to be saying here is that we
cannot use the posted speed limit as an indicator of the safe speed at which to drive. I agree with that, but it has to be said that earlier, safetyman said that as long as we remain within the speed limit, we will be safe.
Given that we as motorists must use our discretion to assess what is the appropriate speed for any particular road, then what is the point of having speed limits at all? The only thing I can think of is that the original purpose of limits was to deter drivers from doing
reckless speeds. I realise that many people here who don't need a speed limit to tell them what is considered the maximum safe speed for a road - we can judge it for ourselves.
But I'm old enough to remember how things were - in the 1970s - particularly in the London area, where it was commonplace to see cars being driven at 50-60 in built up areas. That was clearly a problem! How should it have been addressed?
