ernest marsh - if you were willing to make a follow up statement, and willing to attend court (if required) then a incident / file would be created and sent to the cps

who, from past experience, would do absolutely nothing.

if they don't care that someone's just tried to kill you, they're hardly going to worry about a truckie on the phone.

Talivans do not normally operate in the hours of darkness. Potential problems include:

1) Prior opinion of speed.
2) Getting adequate video on the number plate.
3) difficulties in targetting the speed meter - especially oncoming vehicles

On occasion they might have a go in well street lit areas, but out of town... Forget it.

So if one was driving on an unlit motorway in the middle of the night, say for example the M4 in Wiltshire, then one should not have to worry about the presence of scamera vans?

Ssshhh....don't tell everybody that there is virtually zero motorway enforcement at night - Police Traffic Patrols are also as rare as hens teeth.

Especially if a Tesco bag has blown up off the carriageway and partially obscured your front number plate

If I were to telephone and report a motorist for using a mobile at the wheel, with time place and reg. number, what would be the chances of getting the case to court, or a conviction?
Presumably the phone log, and the cell records would verify my witness statement. The only defence might be a claim the passenger was using it.

I only ask because I have twice been worried at the driving of lorry drivers on the M6 using phones. I have seen more, but (sometimes) their driving was impeccable despite the phone clamped to the ear!

I was travelling south on the m5 about 3 weeks ago in my artic, it was about 3 or 4 in the morning i had been following ANC parcel wagon for about 30 miles we had just got past the last Gloucester junction when this artic randomly started drifting all over the place i crapped my pants and dropped well back about 150yards i put between us, i watched him very closely and was wondering if i should do the driver a favour and call the fuzz, but then i thought no he'd get in so much trouble, but i soon changed my mind when i saw him drift out to the fast lane and back again, i called the police gave her the exact location and rego number, but was told they didnt have a unit in the area (amazing motorway hq 5 miles down the road) as i was on the phone one of those posh mercedes estate police cars went past like a bat out of hell, i said quick one of your patrols has just past me! she said they were responding to a walker further down the motorway! I ask, whats worse 44-ton of metal swerving all over the place or some pillock taking a short cut?

Hmmm. Wonder what the response would have been if you'd have said "Oh well, never mind, the police car's just ploughed into the back of the arctic I was just telling you about."
