I've just had a telephone report that the first SPECS camera at J8, M62 westbound is hidden behind a bridge.

Can anyone confirm, or better, photograph?

What partnership area is that?

Don't remember one behind a bridge.

And I wasn't driving so I was paying attention to that kind of thing.

They are all on very permanent looking gantries, like this one.

That is the last camera eastbound. It's a crop of a bigger pic if I crop it like this...

I don't see any sign of a bridge.

I suspect someone is mistaking a CCTV camera for a SPECS one.

We've got some of the damned things surrounding our junction on the M6 at the moment, due to a temporary roadworks restriction. I can't help but think what a strange Victorian look the support gantries have!

From my observations, it would seem that a fair few motorists have the following queries:

Q. Upon noting a SPECS gantry in the distance and realising that it may be the second one not the first, how slow should one go to ensure one doesn't get a ticket?

Q. In the above circumstance, will staring wild-eyed in the rear view mirror prevent that lorry from shunting me?

Q. What is the most common type of motorway crash?

I'm driving that way tomorrow night, so I'll have a look.

Edit: the partnership would surely be the HA? But if not then it'd be Cheshire.

That's an easy one: Turn round promptly using the handbrake race up the hard shoulder untill u see the first camera turn around and start again,.

As far as I am aware these cameras were installed to monitor a reduced speed limit in road works, and are therefore nothing to do with any camera partnership.

As to the first one being "hidden behind a bridge", surely SPECS cameras are front facing. If you can't see them, they can't see you! Now I can understand why they might want to hide Gatsos behind bridges...

I think that whoever phoned might have had his tongue just a little in his cheek!

There's no bridge in the way of the 1st camera.

I get this way, Jct 8 is the new one just west of the "Burtonwood" services. I don't travel the road regularly but (If asked nicely I can :D )

I'll try to take a look (digi cam at the ready).........

:edit:..Paul, I think that the Burtonwood service area is the border between the Cheshire and Merseyside areas, west of there (I think) is Merseyside who have very few Gatso's but have become more active very recentley with Mobile Vans, Cars and Bike mounted stuff.

I believe that near the western end (last few miles)of the M62 there are more that may be specs, but I've never been that way for years(can't help there I'm afraid)........could be that they're creeping east though!......

The boundary is a couple of miles west of that exit, so some of the SPECS are in Cheshire. And yes, I saw the cameras before they were activated, and most (but not all) had "camera not in use" signs next to them. I recall being surprised when I saw the first one, as I had not been expecting to see SPECS cameras on gantries on this stretch. However I'm pretty sure that they were put in to enforce a 50 limit in roadworks, and are not intended as a permanent feature.

As for "Merseyside have very few Gatsos", I take it you don't drive there very much. Have a look here:

Yes Nedsram, I did say that I don't get to Liverpool very much :) but notice where they all are......

Mainly they are distributed IN Liverpool or through Bootle ...through the southern area of Southport where the footballers mansions are....And I'm suprised by the many sites on the "Wirral" being included here, I thought they were in Cheshire?

The rest are mainly "Red light" cameras which I don't count...Except the M62 (Liverpool end) which I've heard about but never seen.

Further east there are none that I know of except Red light cams. St Helens, Billinge, Newton-le-Willows, Earlstown, Haydock, Winwick, Croft, Culcheth all have none.

BUT! they do recently operate vans...cars, Laser equiped bikes etc etc.....This has only happened recently despite there being no great difference between the accident figures for (camera free) Merseyside against other areas with BLANKET camera coverage. I guess the money is what is attracting them!....... A VERY bad move I think on their behalf......Bad publicity for them has already started, and will only get worse.........
