Just musing as i crawled along the m42 this morning.

They've put new VSL gantries in recently but are only using them for advisory speed limits at present.

I'm used to advisory speed limits & restrictions being ended with the word 'End' on the matrix, on the m42 they have a representation of the NSL sign.

When they start illuminating the red rings round the signs to make it an enforceable speed limit, what is the correct way to terminate it ?

I believe either is fine. They used to terminate them with an NSL sign ages ago, but it's been slowly replaced with "end". Though some of the smaller repeater type of signs ni the central reservation near me still show NSL. I dont think theres any difference legally.

Incidentally, the M42 is aprt of an ATM trial http://www.highways.gov.uk/knowledge/tcc/atm/index.htm

Hi
Thanks for the Information. I was a regular driver on that stretch of motorway when the limit was 50 mph in the roadworks. There were tailbacks most of the times and I heard of two accidents in these tailbacks on the radio. I assume that more accidents occured in the tail backs. I note that the web site said the limit and cameras were to protect the work force ! It would be interesting to know if the casualty rate went up or down overall.

Also the scheme is to reduce congestion etc. Now at present we have 3 lanes at 70 mph. and the improvemnt is to have four lanes at 50 mph. So we increase lanes by 25% and reduce speed by 28.6%. Does this mean more congestion ?

Of more concern - how has the 50 mph limit been decided - is it the 85 percentile speed ? If not are we going to see an INCREASE in accidents ?

:) Richard
