I was coming back from work on the A246 Hawks Hill section, when i saw a police van parked on the opposite side of the road and the bonnet facing me, and when i went passed it, it had cameras on tripods standing at the back of the van, and im just curious what they are, are they ANPR vans???

it was there today, i looked at it closely this time and at the front of the van was a police bike and the back of the van were 2 cameras mounted on tripods each, and on the back window was a speed camera sign, so it was definatly a speed van. my question is will it get cars going the other direction aka me or does it only monitor cars coming towards it

They can work both ways. However, they are usually in cahoots with a fast police car which stops the alleged offender on the day.

I am sure it is ANPR not speed. They are looking for un-insured/untaxed. The use of the camera sign is just a visable deterant to the public. They use the camera sign on the side of the city warden camera vans round here, too. The two cameras are pointed to read number plates in the different lanes. We see the ANPR vans out a lot when there are political conferences on or royal visits.
