I have found this site most interesting and thought that i would add my two pence worth!
Are are two things that get on my tits!!

1, I think that two many people dont know which lane they should be in when on the motorway. I would love for the speed limit to be increased but first we need to sort out lane habits! I work alot in germany and spend much time on the autobahn, were there are no speed limits but not everyone chooses to speed, but those who do not want to speed simply stay in the inside lane and dont sit in the middle lane holding everyone up!! im sure that we have all come across this in the uk were someone is in the middle lane for no reason!! i believe if this was sorted out, the roads here would become quicker very quick! Anyone agree??

2, Im all up for camaras, but only in places like, outside schools, parks, oap homes and accident black sorts were they might actually save lives. Not in the middle of a 4 lane motorway were they simply make money and cause more accidents then they prevent!! Anyone agree again?

<pedant mode on>
how can you "speed" if there are no speed limits?

I think what you mean is that people drive at a comfortable speed for themselves and the conditions and not with their foot to the floor.

<pedant mode off>

Yeah, Sorry thats what a ment. From what i have seen, many autobahn uses dont tend to go much over 80ish but at least they stay in there lane and dont block the others! Mind you i was doing 150 on my bike and a BMW came past me like i was standing still!!!

Agreed ...lane discipline in this country is abysmal!
It's not just the MILOS either...there is a growing trend to use the outside lane as personal property as well...perhaps the influx of our drive on the right continental neighbours has contributed to this phenomenon, whatever but it is on the increase.
I often hear the phrase " I was in the fast lane" ...now when I learned to drive there was a nearside middle and offside lane on a 3 laned motorway...the offside lane was intended for overtaking only...not 'going fast'....so where has this "fast lane" sprung up from?

I haven't got much time today, so just briefly...

Speeds and lane discipline are rather interconnected.

The more faster traffic there is the more motivation there is to learn to keep to the left (left in the UK, obviously, right in the rest of Europe).

I'm also rather unconvinced that 'keep left' is the right rule. There's no need to keep left on a deserted road, and a better rule might be 'never obstruct faster traffic'.

I agree with what your saying paul, maybe i didnt right my piece very well, but i think you get my drift! I think that maybe a little education about this when people are passing there tests would go along way.

When I did my bit of dual-carriageway driving, the instructor stated: "there is no need to keep to the inside lane if the outside lane is full of slower traffic"
Which is how I drove on my test, which I passed with 1 point against me (how was I to know the woman was going to run across the pedestrian crossing while trying to light a fag and hold a bag at the same time ?)

Anyway, there is no way anyone can drive on the inside lane...it is full of trucks driving at anywhere from 10-60 mph. The middle lane is full of trucks trying to overtake the inside lane trucks, with a speed differential of 2-3 miles-per-week and the outside lane is full of pedants driving at 69.9999 mph (if you read their lips they are saying to themselves "the speed limit is 70mph...the speed limit is 70mph...the speed limit is 70mph")
Then you come to London...and the motorway has loads of drivers getting-off to put their false number plates on and then rejoining the flow....so they can drive at whatever speed they can manage to get to, and ignore all those unreadable signs (how can you read them ?.....if you take your eyes off the road you're going to be sushi in a second).....while going hysterical the moment a box junction comes into view....

I'm getting to the old, old story: The one about the butterfly in china. You know, the butterfly flaps its wings and there is a gale in the UK.
I consider that all the traffic-flow problems are due to the 65-year old driving his vintage (and pristine) allegro in Sudbury....THAT'S why the rest of cannot get higher than 56mph...

No, seriously !
The roads are full of trucks, of various sizes, during the day. At night, they are virtually empty. Of everything. Many of the trucks during the day are empty. This country has a pressing need for someone to explain to the transport companies the meaning of: Logistics. It has a dire need for someone to consider dramatically lowering the rates of vehicle taxation if used only at off-peak times. This country needs someone to think of something other than scamming more cash out of vehicle operation.

I agree.

Always have done.

Aggressive speed enforcement kleads to poor lane discipline.
